Today we’d like to introduce you to Charles Key
Hi Charles, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
As an artist, my passion lies in transforming spaces and lives through creativity. My journey began in South Central Los Angeles, where art became my refuge amid the challenges of growing up in a community marked by systemic inequality, violence, and loss. While these experiences could have defined me, they instead shaped my resolve to use art as a vehicle for empowerment, education, and healing.
My passion for art and beautification aligns with my commitment to fostering community engagement and storytelling through creative expression. My work, whether through large-scale murals, mixed media, or public art installations, seeks to inspire dialogue and provide a voice to underrepresented narratives. I believe that art has the power to bridge divides, illuminate shared histories, and spark meaningful change.
My background in engineering complements my artistic practice, allowing me to merge technical precision with imaginative design. Whether revitalizing spaces in Nashville’s JC Napier and Sudekum Homes Community or collaborating on projects across the U.S., I strive to create work that not only beautifies but also uplifts. As someone who has both witnessed and overcome adversity, I bring a unique perspective to addressing the challenges faced by underserved communities.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I believe with any road it has had it shares of ups and downs. I wasnt sure if this was my calling until my life began to line up with art while other things made me unhappy. While I cannot say that I was headed down the wrong road. I was however standing still not knowing what my next move would be. So I practiced everyday. I took the Corner to Corner entrepreneurship course which propelled me into making art something I could use to support my family. I had family and community support that helped clear the path to my now success and future. Along the way I had many doubts in my skills and abilities to standout in such a broad arena. I remember spending my last few dollars and maxing out a credit card, only for the project to not be what I desired. I saw how if I undervalued myself and not have confidence in my work others would do the same. I know hold the confidence and education I need to continue on my path. Special thanks to my Pastor Dr. Judy Johnson for giving me my first wall, actually a house, which allowed me to make mistakes and recieve exposure which has and still is opening so many doors.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
As a visual artist and muralist, my work is deeply rooted in storytelling, history, and community engagement. I specialize in mixed-media art, incorporating acrylic paint, markers, and unconventional materials such as moss to create textured, thought-provoking pieces. My art explores themes of cultural identity, social awareness, and environmental sustainability, sparking conversations that go beyond the canvas.
I am best known for my ability to merge contemporary artistic expression with historical and cultural narratives, using color, texture, and symbolism to evoke emotions and reflection. My murals and artwork can be found in various cities across the U.S., from Los Angeles to Nashville, each carrying a message of resilience, transformation, and connection.
One of my proudest accomplishments is the opportunity to create art that inspires communities and amplifies voices that are often unheard. Whether through large-scale public murals or intimate gallery pieces, my goal is to leave a lasting impact—one that encourages people to see art not just as decoration, but as a catalyst for change.
What sets me apart from others is my unique approach to materials and storytelling. By integrating organic elements and layered textures, I bring a tactile depth to my work that invites viewers to engage beyond the visual. My artistic process is deeply intentional, blending past influences with forward-thinking perspectives to create pieces that honor history while envisioning a brighter future.
Above all, I am passionate about using my art to inspire, challenge, and uplift—turning blank spaces into visual narratives that encourage dialogue, action, and appreciation for the world around us.
Alright, so to wrap up, is there anything else you’d like to share with us?
