Conversations with Nathan Merovich

Today we’d like to introduce you to Nathan Merovich

Hi Nathan, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
As a kid, I grew up listening to old country and old rock with dad in our garage while he would work on stuff.
I started playing guitar in lessons from 8 to around 11 or 12 years old with my guitar teacher, Michael Morrison. I actually play guitar by ear so when I was at my lessons I would sit back to back with Mike and play back whatever chord he would strum.
I would sing at the top of my steps around 11, where no one could see me until it was time for dinner. The first ever song I sang on video was Cowboys and Angels…I think somebody has that one somewhere, hahah.
I played my first live gig with a local band called Laredo around the age of 16!
In 2018 a family friend of ours, Jimmy Runkle opened a moonshine distillery called Bald Hills Distillery in Dover Pa and another life long friend of mine, Tia Welsh began managing the place. She wanted to bring some business in so they got some sound equipment and started doing open mics. She invited me down for some of them and eventually people started to show up. We started to book some shows for me there and at other local bars on Fridays or Saturday nights and it just kind of took off. Tia called me one day and said she had the idea of us writing a song about the story behind how Jimmy started the distillery so the next day we sat on the swing outside the distillery building and wrote the song in about 15 minutes. That song is called 90 Proof Pour and we put it out as my first ever single in 2019. Tia and her business partner, Leslie Cappello started CappelloWelsh Management in October of 2019 and I was their very first client! I went from doing construction five days a week and playing four nights a week, down to doing construction 3 days a week because music was becoming a full time thing for me both with my bookings and financially until this past August of 2024 when I finally quit my construction job, signed a lease in Nashville and made the move to doing music full time!
My family and all of my friends come out to all my shows, near and far at this point and it’s so great to look back on the journey of playing around camp fires as a kid to opening up for acts such as Chris Janson, Lainey Wilson, Chase Matthew, Josh Ross, Kameron Marlow, Michael Ray, Dylan Scott, Ryan Hurd, Big & Rich, Lee Brice, Easton Corbin, Matt Stell, Russell Dickerson, Alana Springsteen, Kylie Morgan, Mark Chesnutt, Larry Fleet, Drew Baldridge, Hailey Whitters, George Birge, and many more.
As of today, I have released 10 singles and a 11 song album called Raised in the Stx. I still come home for shows but I’m in Nashville during the week playing writers rounds and doing co-writes as much as possible. I write a lot with Tia and also my buddy Ryan Staub, who actually just made the move to home with me! I also do some co-writes with Lukas Scott, Kasey Tyndall, Chris Andreucci, Cliff Dorsey, Trae Taylor, Brandon Manley, Jon Haywood, etc.
You can find me at Live Oak, The Row, Nash House, The Local, Scoreboard, pretty much anywhere that does rounds and do play a few times a month at Bootleggers on Broadway, which is fitting considering it’s a moonshine bar and that’s the first place I started to play back home. Kind of ironic actually.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I would say over all it’s been a smooth road, I’ve been at this, with my team, for going on 7 years now and we’ve done a lot! I’ve opened for some pretty big names in the industry so I would consider myself blessed but there is always the voice in the back of your mind that wants to be the headliner and get your music heard, have the fans yelling your name and singing your songs back to you. It’ll happen, for now, I’m writing songs and putting in my time.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I actually have a pretty close relationship, myself and my music, within the hunting community. The past two years, I had the honor of doing the private opening ceremony for the NRA at The Great American Outdoor Show and then did two gigs for them in the small arena through the week, as well as shows at booths for company’s such as CamoSpace, RSI outdoors, Phoenix Outfitting Agency, Great Grey & Western Trophy Outfitters and Mossy Oak Properties – Pa Land. Then came down here to Nashville the following week to do the same thing at booths at NWTF. In October last year I was asked by CamoSpace to join them on a Sika deer hunt with Pat & Nicole Reeves. They just aired the episode from their show Driven Hunter, featuring my song, Back 40 Bucks. Two years ago, I played a show for Bowhunters Super Store and Michael Waddell of Bone Collector got up and sang along Haired Country boy with me, there’s a few videos of that somewhere out there too!
I have always been an avid hunter, when I’m not on stage you can find me in the woods or by the water for water fowl season, spring and fall turkey with my Dad, of course, deer season. I’m actually headed to Midland, Texas the end of this month for a hunt with my buddy Jeremy and then I’ll be headed to Canada later this year with Great Grey & Western Trophy Outfitters and Phoenix Outfitting Agency for a pretty cool hunt. Archery or rifle, that’s my peace away from all the crazy. My goal is to expand my relationship with the hunting community and get to do music and hunt at the same time!

We all have a different way of looking at and defining success. How do you define success?
Ultimately, it’s pretty simple, making a living doing what you love. It doesn’t need to be fancy as long as I am happy, that’s all that matters.
