Conversations with Twist It

Today we’d like to introduce you to Twist It

Twist It , we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
It started out with Sara Higgins, the drummer and founder of “Twist It”. I have always had such a strong passion for music and knew from a very young age that I wanted to make it my career. I attended a music school where I then met guitarist, Logan Smith. We were in a music program together for about a year and then I asked him if he would be interested in starting an original band with me. We have had many different members in the band but in October of 2023 we met our singer, Kayla Hallman. She was truly the driving force we were missing. We saw her performing live with a different band at the time at a local show and Logan and I immediately looked at each other and knew she was the one. We then asked her to join the band and she told us no at first but then with enough convincing we roped her in. We then quickly went to Nashville to record our 5 song EP called “Breathe”. We have since then played many shows including getting to play at venues such as “Reverb” in reading PA, “The Landis Theater” in Vineland NJ, and “Dingbatz” in Clifton NJ. We have gotten to open up for Hed P.E, Taproot, The Millionaires, and Holy Mother. We are always writing new music and can’t wait to share it with the world.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Being in a band definitely has its up’s and down’s. Finding the right people was one of the biggest struggles starting out. It’s very difficult to be on the same page as 4 other people and have the same drive, focus, and goals as each other. Also finding people you share similar music taste with is a very crucial part as it is the driving force behind writing original music. Being a mostly female dominant band also has its challenges. As you can imagine there are people in the industry who don’t want to take your seriously or who believe you aren’t good enough due to being a women. Even with its challenges being in a band is simply the best feeling in the world. Getting to share your music with thousands of people and see them sing your lyrics back to you is a feeling none of us would trade for anything.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?

Do you have any advice for those just starting out?
If I were to give advice to new bands, especially those who are diving into the world of hard rock and djent, here’s what I wish I knew when I was just starting out:

Focus on Building Your Identity: Each member brings something special to the table, and that’s your strength. Find what makes your band stand out, both in terms of music and branding, and lean into it. Fans will connect with the authenticity of who you are. Also don’t rush the Process: It’s easy to get caught up in wanting to be everywhere all at once—playing every show, releasing tons of music. But take the time to refine your sound, develop your style, and really hone in on what makes your music distinct. Your fans will appreciate the quality over quantity, and your band will be more confident in your path forward.
