Today we’d like to introduce you to Brecken Myers
Hi Brecken, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I am a Nashville Native, born here, but raised all over. We moved around from Phoenix, to Alabama, to New Orleans, continually expanding my horizons and experiences from a young age. Dancing, singing, and painting my way through childhood, I explored my creative energy through many mediums, finally landing on cosmetology school after my gap year in 2016.
A friend encouraged me to pursue makeup in 2019 after I gushed about how it would be the the pink collar career of my dreams. I made business cards with no plan and began to hand them out to everyone saying “I am a makeup artist, you should book me!” I was soon connected to a makeup artist who took me under her wing, bringing me on set, training me, and welcoming me into the community.
My business grew steadily over the next few years, building client relationships with record labels and production companies, consistently booking anything from commercials and photoshoots to department heading an international film in 2022. I was delighted to be creating for a living and felt inspired to move to New York City. So, after telling a select few, I packed everything and left on another adventure.
New York was a delight, an awakening of myself, shining light on ideas and projects I was proud of, things falling away that needed to fall away, and lifelong friendships born on the 4th floor of a Park Slope apartment. I worked in SoHo, constantly charging my inspiration batteries as I people watched. (The F train ride to Brooklyn flaunts many an outfit that has gassed my creativity to no end!)
But something was missing and I felt a pull back to Nashville in the sweetest way. I decided to finish getting my cosmetology license and train behind the chair in a salon. Cut to spring of 2024, I’m working behind the chair at a blow-dry bar after completing school, securing that license and that BAG. A friend connects me with Fruits Hair Lab, where the team welcomed me with open arms as their apprentice, teaching vital lessons and expanding my knowledge exponentially. That made signing with AMAX Talent Agency as a hair and makeup artist just the cherry on top of magical year.
Now working on set as a HMUA, and behind the chair specializing in cuts, color, and curls, I have curated such a unique perspective of the beauty world. Beauty is messy, technicolor, human, intimate, and divine! Understanding the connection between adorning the physical, while also building up the emotional world is vital to working with hair and makeup. And that’s the awareness I hold when I work with my clients.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Variable income has always been a struggle, all my 1099 baddies know what I mean! Especially as someone with ADHD, building systems and budgets has always helped me keep balance in my life.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
With over seven years of experience, I specialize in rich tones, blonding, and detailed cuts, blending precision with creativity. As for makeup, my specialty is editorial work, high end perfect skin, soft complimentary colors or intense contrast. My passion for beauty has taken me around the globe, drawing inspiration from diverse cultures. Known for my gentle touch, efficient work, and attentive listening, I can ensure every client feels seen and empowered.
Throughout my career, I have demonstrated a strong ability to work collaboratively with creative teams, interpret client briefs, and create hair and makeup designs that exceed expectations. My expertise in different hair and makeup mediums, such as feature films, Vouge runway shows, and digital media, showcases my versatility.
Before we let you go, we’ve got to ask if you have any advice for those who are just starting out?
Simple:
-Don’t grow disheartened if you are not seeing results immediately.
-Cosmetology school is both the shortest and longest months of your life, power through mama, you can do it.
-Deeply rooted plants do not break, only bend. Plant your roots in your community and invest your craft in them. They will bring you the water you need!
-Always stop to watch a butterfly, or appreciate something beautiful around you, that energy will return.
-Clean your makeup brushes, and shampoo your hair twice, silly.
