Today we’d like to introduce you to Marcus Malone
Hi Marcus, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
My musical journey began at just 3 years old, when I would bang on pots and pans—and sometimes my mother’s head—with pencils and pens. By the age of 5, I was playing the drums at my local church, St. Mark M.B.C. When I turned 12, I was thrown into the role of organist after our church lost its musician. With only a basic understanding of left-hand bass notes, my stepfather, Fred Banks, taught me how to pair those bass lines with chords, and that was the turning point for me.
I started out playing quartet music with various local and national groups, which eventually led me to become the musical director for Darrel Petties & Strength in Praise. This opportunity not only honed my skills as a musician but also paved the way for me to become a producer, having produced hit songs like “New Season” and “At The Cross.”
My musical path then took a turn into R&B when I joined my first band, Prosody, performing locally around the city. I later became the keyboardist for the legendary funk group Cameo, and I even took on roles as the former music director and manager for Stephanie Mills. Throughout my career, I’ve had the privilege of traveling the world, playing for a wide array of national gospel and secular artists.
What brings me the most joy is the establishment of my own music school, Total Experience, 13 years ago, along with a performing arts summer camp called Dream Kids. I also founded a Christian-based production called Church Girls Rock, which honors women of faith who are making a significant impact in their communities and churches.
I formed the Marcus Malone Band years ago, which performs at corporate events, weddings, and more. In 2024, we released two singles, “Mr. Oowee” and “She Got Me Going Crazy.”
I’m a proud father to “J3” Jaden, Janiyah, and Jamari Malone, and everything I do is with the intention of leaving a meaningful legacy for them. Today, I produce artists and run a consulting company, a graphic business, and an audio guestbook service. I’m also grateful to be endorsed by Yamaha, Nord, Hammond Organ, Juicy Ears, and KXKS sneaker backpacks. At 39 years old, I’m excited for what the future holds!
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It has definitely been a marathon rather than a sprint. Along the way, I’ve faced several struggles, including the challenge of developing discipline both in my craft and in my personal life. There have been broken promises and hurt feelings on both sides of the music field, which can be tough to navigate. Staying motivated to create music has also had its ups and downs. Being on the road means missing out on important activities with my kids was also challenging.
What keeps me motivated through all these challenges is Philippians 4:13: “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” This verse serves as a constant reminder that with faith and perseverance, I can overcome any obstacle in my path.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am an entrepreneur, music teacher, consultant, producer, songwriter, composer, graphic designer, and visionary. I’m known for my professionalism, my musical expertise, and my commitment to helping others achieve their dreams. I take the greatest pride in being a bridge that allows fellow musicians and singers to live out their dreams, and to touch the lives of many children and women through my visions.
I specialize in approaching everything with a spirit of excellence, particularly in my piano playing. What truly sets me apart is my faith in God, which guides and inspires everything I do.
Can you talk to us a bit about the role of luck?
I don’t subscribe to the idea of good or bad luck. Instead, I believe that life teaches us valuable lessons, and all experiences—the good, the bad, and the ugly—contribute to shaping us into the best versions of ourselves, both in business and in life. Each challenge and triumph has played a role in my growth and development.
