Today we’d like to introduce you to Mariah Faith.
Hi Mariah, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I have been singing since I could talk. Grew up singing in church, show choir and then eventually a local funk band, because they were the only band that would play with me at the time. At this point in my life, I was really struggling with alcoholism and the loss of my stepfather who raised me. In February of 2022, I made the decision to get sober and live a better life. It was a beautiful thing to share my story and build a following of people who could relate to the struggles I have faced. In 2023, I got the amazing opportunity to be a contestant on the 21st season of American Idol landing in the top 20. Hearing the feedback and encouragement from the judges and others in my life, gave me the confidence to quit my job as a hair stylist to peruse music full time and move here to Tennessee to chase my dreams. I started writing poems in middle school and attempted writing songs in high school. I wrote my first song in 2020 during Covid just messing around with some friends and ended up falling in love with songwriting. It has been a blessing being able to write for not only myself but other artists as well.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
For me, it has not necessarily been a smooth road but I am grateful for the lessons I have learned along the way. I think it’s important to not waste your struggle but to use it as a testament to others in letting them know that they are not alone and that things might be scary but you should do it scared. I grew up with a father who was an addict in a low income household where no one did music, so it never felt like something that could be a real job. That being said, my stepfather and mother were very supportive after they saw how dedicated I was to singing. After my stepfather passed in 2019, I was catapulted into a drinking problem that already existed and put my family and I through hell. Because of that, I have made so many connections with people who have also suffered the loss of a loved one and dealt with addiction. Life has ups and downs, but I have learned to appreciate the good and the bad and use the bad for good by learning and growing from it.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I’m a soul country singer and writer of all genres. I spend my time doing shows, writing, recording music and making connections. I specialize in provoking emotion and showing vulnerability through not only my music but relationships and how I share myself with the world. I’m know for adding a soulful element to country music while staying true to its roots. I’m most proud of the relationships I’ve built and the opportunities I’ve had to work with some of my biggest influences in music, receiving the key to the city of my hometown, Conway, SC from the mayor, releasing my first three singles in 2024 after recording and writing so maybe songs, it felt good to finally start putting my story out there through song. I’m also proud of the many more songs to come! I think what sets me apart from others in one way, is the many different influences I’ve had in my life growing up. From my papa listing to Motown, my meme playing bluegrass, my father’s side of the family listening to rock music and my mama playing r&b and country. It gives me a different flavor when approaching singing a cover or writing an original, as well as a deep appreciation for all music and its roots. I also think my ability to appreciate everything and everyone with a positive mindset and kind heart.
Do you have any advice for those looking to network or find a mentor?
My best advice would be to put yourself in every room possible, never turn down an invite because you never know who you will run into! Things like writers rounds, songwriting camps and even showing up, supporting other artists as an audience member and do not hesitate to reach out to people or let fear be a factor in building relationships you can learn from. I’m blessed to have found some of my best and favorite mentors at writers rounds in the most peculiar places. Do the free gig, do the awkward dinner and go to the crazy bar and socialize. Networking is such an important factor in this industry.
