

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sarah Alliston.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
My career began in the fast-paced fashion industry after graduating with a degree in Fashion Merchandising and Business. I worked in Product Development for Guess before launching my wholesale clothing showroom in Los Angeles, where I connected designers with retailers like Nordstrom and Anthropologie. For 23 years, I thrived in this demanding yet rewarding field but I always felt that I would not end my career here.
So as life had other plans, this is how I ended where I am today. When my father-in-law fell ill with cancer in 2010, he enlisted my help in managing his insurance adjusting business. This unexpected role sparked a new passion for me. After his passing in 2011, I continued to assist my husband, who managed the family’s Oregon-based insurance agency remotely.
When we relocated to Tennessee in 2021, I embraced a new chapter and opened my own Farmers Insurance agency in Brentwood. I absolutely love what I do. It’s not a job; it really is a passion. Every day, I get to meet someone new, hear their needs, and help them. I call myself an insurance geek because I love it so much.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Being a small business owner is not for the weak. It’s all the things. Challenging both financially and mentally. It’s 24/ 7, with no paid time off. No one thanks you for the hard work or rewards you for overachieving. You sacrifice your time with family for time to build an empire. And after all that is said and done, you get to look back at your success and say, “I did that all on my own.”
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
I am a small insurance agency in Brentwood, TN. I primarily offer Farmers Insurance products for personal lines insurance such as home owners, auto, specialty and life to customers throughout the entire state of TN. I also work with small and large business on their commercial insurance. However, I am appointed with several carriers so I am always able to find the perfect fit for our customers needs. I have two staff members who do the same. Our job is to help make insurance not be a challenging thought. I pride myself in being very transparent with anyone we speak to and help to thoroughly explain what they need so they are never over insured or under insured. It’s never a “sale” in my office. I despise that word. We provide coverage to those who need it and that’s the bottom line.
What does success mean to you?
My guiding principle is simple: “Get up, get dressed, and it will come.” This mantra is a reminder that hard work and perseverance will lead to success in every endeavor.
