Daily Inspiration: Meet Kayla Works

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kayla Works.

Hi Kayla, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
My journey began in Nashville, AR, where I graduated from Nashville High School, proudly embracing the Scrapper spirit. I pursued higher education at Hendrix College, University of Arkansas at Cossatot, and University of Arkansas at Eversity, earning degrees in Applied Science Accounting and Business in Accounting and Finance.

I started my career at Colonial Life in 2011 as Key Office Personnel, taking on various roles over the years. In February 2022, I joined Unum’s National Client Group Underwriting team. My Toastmasters journey began in August 2022 with Unum Toastmasters. I served as Vice President of Public Relations, Club President, and Area Director. Currently, I am the District 63 Club Growth Director for Toastmasters International, where I focus on expanding and supporting clubs across the district. Additionally, I co-lead Unum’s employee network, upLIFT, and serve as Vice President for the Arkansas NAAIA Chapter.

With 14 years of experience, I am results-driven, adept at managing large caseloads, and possess strong analytical skills. I excel in leading and communicating strategies that benefit both the company and our customers. My systematic approach to problem-solving ensures project deliverables are met on time.

Outside of work, I enjoy traveling, dining, and spending time with friends and family. My two lab mixes, Killian and Ellie Mae, keep me active. Volunteering and giving back to the community are passions of mine, as I strive to make a positive global impact. My personal goals include becoming a better leader, mentoring others, and continuous professional and personal improvement.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I like to say the road is never smooth. My journey has had its highs and lows, a few flat rides here and there, and an upgrade to the navigation system. Despite struggles like self-doubt, burnout, and focusing on self-care, these experiences have shaped who I am today. I strive to be intentional and transparent in everything I do, starting with holding myself accountable.

For the first decade of my career, I went strong and hard, often working long nights and overtime, which led to burnout. I loved working on projects, taking on challenges, and becoming a Subject Matter Expert in my field. This drive to develop and grow sometimes overshadowed my focus on health and self-awareness. Eventually, I needed a reset and had to realign my life (essentially upgrading my navigation system). I shifted from being the SME to asking questions and embracing constructive feedback, which helped me continue to grow.

Thankfully, I gained a wonderful support system with Toastmasters in 2022. This support has allowed me to work on my executive presence, develop effective ways to evaluate and provide constructive feedback, and become a well-rounded leader.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am currently a National Client Group Underwriter at Unum, where I specialize in assessing and managing risk for large client accounts. My role involves analyzing complex data, developing underwriting strategies, and ensuring that our clients receive the best possible coverage tailored to their needs. I am known for my strong analytical skills, attention to detail, and ability to handle large caseloads efficiently.

One of my proudest achievements is my involvement with Toastmasters International. Since joining Unum Toastmasters in 2022, I have taken on several leadership roles, including Vice President of Public Relations, Club President, and Area Director. Currently, I serve as the District 63 Club Growth Director, where I focus on expanding and supporting clubs across the district. This experience has significantly enhanced my executive presence, public speaking, and leadership skills.

In 2024, I co-led a successful HBCU Engagement Event on the Colonial Life campus in South Carolina, which resulted in two individuals becoming Scholars and one securing a full-time position. Additionally, I organized the 2024 Annual Toastmasters District 63 Conference, a major event that brought together members from across the district. My efforts were recognized with the 2024 Unum’s Employee Network Inclusive Leadership Award. Furthermore, I was highlighted in the 2025 Common Impact Volunteer Spotlight for my dedication to community service.

What sets me apart from others is my systematic approach to problem-solving and my commitment to continuous improvement. I am dedicated to being intentional and transparent in my work, always holding myself accountable. My ability to lead and communicate persuasive strategies that benefit both the company and our customers is a key strength. Additionally, my passion for mentoring others and giving back to the community through volunteering reflects my dedication to making a positive impact.

Overall, my journey has been marked by a relentless pursuit of growth and excellence, both professionally and personally. I strive to be a well-rounded leader who not only achieves results but also inspires and supports others along the way.

If we knew you growing up, how would we have described you?
Wow! Growing up, I was a very blunt and stubborn person. I had no problem voicing my opinion, but I also knew when to step back and let others be heard. When asked about my journey, I often think of how I became best friends with Courtney. We grew up in the same small town of about 4,000 people. I was best friends with her fraternal twin brother, and we ate lunch together throughout our school years.

In our small town, it was easy to feel like a “doughnut hole in a doughnut hole” – we grew up together, confronted each other with conflicts, and moved on, but we always had our close-knit group. I enjoyed mingling with different groups, whether it was playing Beyblade or touch football. This brings me to my relationship with Courtney.

In 11th grade, I noticed Courtney sitting alone at lunch for three days straight. You see we had two sets of lunches (A and B) and her friend group was on A while we were on B. She felt as though she had to eat alone. But not on my watch! Food is always better with company and laughter. I asked her brother to invite her over, but he said she was fine. Frustrated, I stood up and walked over to her. She looked up at me, and I said, “Hey, you’re Bub’s sis, right?” She responded firmly, “My name is Courtney!” Her response made me laugh, and I restarted the conversation with, “Hey, Courtney!” and invited her to sit with me.

I was involved in everything from Honors, Band, Swim, Tennis, to Running, and Courtney’s horrified expression at the thought of sitting with my friends was clear. She quickly declined, so I leaned in with a smile and asked if she would prefer my group to come sit with her instead. Surprisingly, she agreed to join us. I introduced her to everyone as Courtney, even though they already knew her. From that day on, Courtney sat with us every day and formed new friendships. She became outspoken and shined, just needing the opportunity to do so.

I believe I have become more adept at creating spaces for individuals to interact. I continue to work towards fostering environments that encourage collaboration and allow people to be their authentic selves.
