Conversations with Bailey Gower

Today we’d like to introduce you to Bailey Gower.

Hi Bailey, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Honestly, images have been integral to my life. I grew up staring at movie posters, and I also loved watching movies. Eventually I decided to write scripts, and got a camera. I started to shoot and fell in love with creating images again. I loved being able to share how I felt about something or how I saw the world.

When my work started attracting attention, I’ve been able to travel the world and meet people I wouldn’t have otherwise. I’m very thankful and fortunate for these experiences.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It’s been a rough and exhausting road at times. As usual in an art community, you’ll have people who might not be willing to help you out due to you being so green. But the ones who go out of their ways and give you opportunities definitely gave me the confidence I needed. Also, learning to have thick skin was something that took me a while to obtain.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am a photographer who focuses on doing portraits, street, and behind the scenes photography. I also do some experiments with cinematography. The camera is my brush and forever will be my main way of getting art created. I am most proud of my photos that I am able to really capture the essence of a person or moment. If I had to pick one, it would have to be a photo I have of Roger and James Deakins. I was very fortunate enough to work at an event of a Q&A with them. I was a Production Assistant alongside a BTS photographer of the event for the first day. Being able to see the person who inspired you to go down this path to begin with was out of this world.

I’d say what sets me apart from others is that I really see each shoot as a quest to find out more about life alongside people. Photos are another way of expressing yourself or others so I always want to go deeper than other photographers who are focused on “cool images” which is fine as well. But I prefer to really dig deep.

What matters most to you? Why?
Being honest in my work. People will look back at photos from 20 to 100 years ago and wonder what that person was like. Sometimes, they wonder what they were going through and so on. I want to convey that in my images, and also give a glimpse in the mind of that person. Or really even a place.
