Daily Inspiration: Meet Tai Orten

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tai Orten.

Hi Tai, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I became fascinated with tattooing after getting my first tattoo at 16. Walking into Jerry Riegger’s shop in Murray, KY, I was in awe of the process and the idea of permanent body art. Determined to be part of it, I convinced Jerry to take me on as an apprentice. He became an incredible mentor, giving a young woman the chance to learn the craft when opportunities were scarce.

Over the past 20 years in the industry, I’ve had the privilege of working with talented artists and incredible people. Even those who presented challenges helped me grow and learn valuable lessons.

Today, I’m proud to own and operate two shops, Alchemy Nashville and Alchemy Murfreesboro, both filled with amazing talent and supportive, creative individuals. I’m constantly inspired by the artists I work alongside and the collaborative energy we share.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
There have certainly been many obstacles along the way, both within the world of tattooing and outside of it. As a member of any minority group, challenges are always present, and being a queer person in the South is no exception—it’s not for the faint of heart, though I’ll admit it could have been much worse.

On top of that, I faced significant medical challenges when I was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer just a month before my 21st birthday. That experience forced me to confront tough realities—learning to accept help, dealing with the loss of much of what I had worked so hard to build, and coming to terms with a body that was failing me and the looming threat of death.

The good news, though, is that I’m still here to share my story. Through it all, I’ve learned invaluable lessons about when to fight, when to let go, and when to simply accept things as they are.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I work closely with clients to blend their ideas with my creative expertise, delivering custom skin adornments that are both personal and meaningful. I see tattooing as a collaborative process and feel comfortable exploring a variety of tattoo styles. Having started my career during a time when street shops were more common, I learned early on that adaptability is key—if a client walked in with an idea, it was my job to find a way to make it work.

While I don’t believe every idea is meant to be tattooed, I’m committed to finding a creative solution for any challenge. My goal is to work within the parameters of what the client envisions, crafting a design they’ll be proud to carry with them. Above all, I strive to ensure that the tattoo experience is enjoyable and meaningful. What sets me apart is my ability to meet clients where they are in life, making it an honor to be part of their personal transformations, which often align with the tattoo journey itself
