Today we’d like to introduce you to Phoenix Knox-Washington.
Hi Phoenix, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I’m the 4th generation of crocheting, I use to sit and watch my great grandmother crocheting before she got ill and passed away. She made the most extravagant blankets for all of the members of our family. At age 10 I finally picked up my hook and yarn and the took off! I started with only crocheting bracelets selling them for 25 cent then upgraded to crocheting over headphones to keep them from being tangled. My biggest and most popular item became my hats when I would customize and put names in them! I just loved that it was rare talent back then especially for a young black teen at that time! Today I crochet for the community as well as still sell my work.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
I would say back then I was called things like “grandma” or lame because all I wanted to do was crochet. Today it is way smoother and I’ve even been blessed to teach others free of charge!
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I go by Phoenix The Entrepreneur and even though I am a Jack of all trades, I specialize in crochet. Having been crocheting over 20 years! I’m best known for my hats which sell out every pop up/ festival that I vend for. I’m most proud of myself for sticking to my art and always evolving it. I rarely use patterns and freehand designs and I believe that sets me apart from others.
Do you any memories from childhood that you can share with us?
My favorite childhood memory is being around the farmers market with my grandma, she was another inspiration for my entrepreneurship.
