Today we’d like to introduce you to Lacy Zee.
Hi Lacy, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I’m a female tattoo artist and I’ve been tattooing for 26 years. I’ve worked across the United States in places like Las Vegas, Montana, Louisiana, the Pacific Northwest and Florida. My career has also taken me across the pond where i worked in the Netherlands and France.
I love to tattoo so I embrace all styles. My favorites being realism, floral, portraits, and “the weird stuff”. I grew up in a tattoo shop near Dallas, Texas watching a close family friend tattoo both of my parents. Ever since i was six years old i knew i wanted to be a tattooist. It took years of hard work to get into the tattoo industry. In the late 90s it was very difficult to obtain a start in this career. Especially hard for women. There were not very many of us choosing this career path. Nowadays it’s really awesome to see more ladies in the business.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
A smooth road it was not. Tattooing is full of self motivation and a lot of techniques. After my apprenticeship , finding the right place to work was challenging. Some shops wouldn’t allow a woman to tattoo in their establishments at all. Others expected a “casting couch” interview. But eventually I found good people to work for.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I do many forms of art. Stage performances (burlesque and sideshow), sculpture, stickers, paint on canvas, and ink in skin. However, I specialize in tattoos. All styles of tattoos. I love doing cover ups and reworking old or poorly done tattoos. I know what it’s like to have tattoos on your body that you really don’t care for or that didn’t come out as they were planned. I love helping people fall in love with their tattoos again.
Do you have recommendations for books, apps, blogs, etc?
I further my professional education by attending seminars at tattoo conventions or by discussing techniques with other tattoo artists whom i respect.
