Life & Work with Meg Hutchinson of NASHVILLE

Today we’d like to introduce you to Meg Hutchinson.

Hi Meg , it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
My journey as a florist began when I was a young girl in Michigan. I grew up surrounded by flowers and from a young age told everyone that I wanted to be a florist one day when I grew up.

Fast forward to my sophomore year of college after an unsuccessful attempt at becoming a nurse, I started to pursue this dream head-on. I attended the Tallulah Rose Flower school in Bath, England and I have been “flowering” ever since.

Over the years this little business I started in my college apartment has grown to become more than I ever imagined. I have learned to love leading teams and I have found so much joy in teaching others about flowers and the industry. I am constantly impressed by the drive and passion that my team brings to the studio every day and I can’t wait to see how much we grow in the coming years. I truly feel so lucky to lead Team Florista as we continue to bring more color and more fun to the industry.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The hardest part was learning how to build and lead a team.

When I started in college I was a one man show, but as the business grew pretty rapidly I had to learn how to rely on on outside help. Finding the right people is always tough, but I have been luckily enough to have been given help freely and generously within the flower community. I had to learn how to delegate, how to communicate clearly, how to let go of control—and trust that others could carry the vision with me, all at a pretty young age.

It was uncomfortable at first, but building a solid, supportive team is the reason this business can thrive today. I learned that leadership is its own kind of creativity—it just looks different than flowers.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
We have this statement here at The Florista, where we want to leave guests at whatever event or wedding we are working saying, “Wow! I can’t believe they did that”. While it sounded silly at first, we knew that moving forward this was our motivator for channeling fun projects and pushing creative boundaries. We specialize in luxury floral designs and installations for large scale events, but more specifically our emphasis and focus is on color, and ideation. What most people dont see behind the scenes is the hundreds of conversations, deliberations, and project trials and errors that we as a team go through to ensure that we are also pushing out creativity forward and trying new things.

Can you talk to us a bit about happiness and what makes you happy?
I think what makes me happiest is being able to create alongside my team. I feel like I have lucked out with my small team that really carries so much weight of this business beside me. We all have out own individual talents, and have worked hard on how to harness each one of those talents to our own advantages- which really all in all benefits The Florista as a whole. There are days at work, that don’t feel like work, where we get to create and have fun together through the chaos of the event industry – and I just wouldn’t trade that for the world.
