Today we’d like to introduce you to Samantha Ingold.
Hi Samantha , so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I started Odd Fox Co. during the Covid pandemic, finding myself let go from my job and finally enough time on my hands to make something that had always just been sort of a daydream into something more organized. I’ve always had an affinity towards nature and collecting the unconventional bits of beauty left out in the woods. Eventually my collections started becoming more and more of scavenged bones that sort of took over the theme of my “home decor”. I’ve loved the idea of finding balance between the “macabre” side of nature and bringing back the beauty to old skulls and bones and eventually found myself decorating and painting these collection pieces of mine.
Odd Fox Co. for awhile was sort of just an expression of my free time and a creative outlet, but through out the years I’ve managed to turn it into something more than I could have imagined. I attend local artistan events now, I’ve done radio interviews, made it a full time job at one point, and established myself as a well known artist in my local art scene, and still feel like I’ve only just scraped the surface of the potential places I want to take Odd Fox.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Definitely not. As any creative person can relate – there are periods of time where the burn out surfaces, pressure to create builds, motivation is fleeting, and inspiration is hard to sometimes manifest. Not the mention the balancing act of raising children, working a demanding job, and maintaining a household. I think the biggest struggle I’ve faced has been the periods of self doubt as well
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I work full time as a bartender outside of Odd Fox, working a sometimes unconventional schedule during nights and weekends.
Within Odd Fox I think I find I’ve most accomplished being able to maintain the idea and dream for five years consecutively – attending local events, art prowls, and teaching myself new mediums and techniques over the years. I’ve gone from working with simple materials like wire and clays to teaching myself actual trades like silversmithing.
I think as far as my art goes something that really sets me aside from others would be the overall style of my work. Incorporating bones, skulls, and taxidermy pieces is somewhat unconventional and of its own niche altogether.
What’s next?
The dream is to turn this secondary “job” into something full time. My future plans look like owning a brick and mortar, hosting art events and workshops, and showcasing other local artists. I really want to dive more into the silversmithing side of my jewelry and focus more on fine jewelry and customs.
