Rising Stars: Meet Taylor Hungerford of Sherman Oaks, CA

Today we’d like to introduce you to Taylor Hungerford.

Hi Taylor, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
Tar & Flowers started as a moniker for my songwriting ventures. I needed an outlet for some emotional grief I was experiencing at the time, and my music became a vessel for that. I have seriously pursued music since 2017 and never looked back. It’s led me to building long running country programs for my fellow artists, like Honky Tonk Saloon, tribute shows to Gram Parsons, Townes Van Zandt and Waylon Jennings, and becoming an adept graphic designer, photographer and promotor.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
With music you accept that hard work does not always equate to success. Art is a subjective field, and sometimes what you’re putting out will not vibe with some folks – and that’s okay. I’m two albums and God knows how many shows into this and still have yet to amass a strong local following. But, to quote Bob Dylan’s grandma, “there is no road to happiness, happiness is the road.”

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I think because of my strong visual sense, my art is also very visual. It paints pictures. I operate in the Americana genre, but my music constantly flirts with genres outside of that. On my first record, I was nominated by the Hollywood Music In Media Awards for my song Ten Ton Heart. While songwriting is not about getting awards, it is nice to be recognized for your work. I have also cultivated many country programs here in LA that have broken great artists and provided good times to many people. I have also put together bills and played at The Troubadour which have been the finest memories of my life.

Before we go, is there anything else you can share with us?
I hope everyone is able to do something with their time that they love and gives their life purpose. Music and its ancillary requirements have given me mine.
