Today we’d like to introduce you to Yasmin Dickerson.
Yasmin, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I’m proof that no matter where you are raised and what your surroundings are you are going to be who you were meant to be. I was raised deep in the woods in a town so tiny it didn’t even have a Walmart. Even though I wasn’t exposed to fashion or the arts I always had a fascination with them. I would check out library books on clothing design and found all the fashion magazines I could.
As a child I would stand up on rocks in my yard and put on performances, I had such a strong desire to create and act but had no way to express it. (the school in my town didn’t have theatre)
I thought my dreams would always just be dreams, I grew up, got married and had two children, we built a house and I thought I would feel complete. But I still had that desire to create, so one day after a long day working at a gym daycare I decided it was time to pursue it.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
A lot of sacrifice has been involved. It costs quite a bit of money to get started with acting; headshots, reels, and training aren’t free, and are very time consuming. And in the beginning it’s hard to get hired without any experience.
Fortunately I had saved up quite a bit of money from selling thrifted clothes on poshmark. I was able to take lower paying acting projects in order to gain experience. But with some of my first projects I just broke even because I needed to pay for child care.
Acting is not an easy job to start, especially when you have a family
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I’m a working actress and model. What I love most about acting is how nothing is ever the same, I’m always getting to play and develop different characters, collaborate with new people, work at new locations.
I’d say my willingness to learn is what sets me apart, I put a lot of effort into everything I do. And try to make sure I’m as prepared as possible before stepping onto set.
Can you talk to us a bit about the role of luck?
As far as luck goes, I knew absolutely nothing about the industry, so when I was first getting started I straight up just called an agent and said I wanted representation and explained that I wanted to be an actress, and you know what? She actually gave me a chance to send her an audition! Which I then had to google “what’s a self tape” that’s how clueless I was lol. But she saw something in me and lucky for me she signed me.
