Today we’d like to introduce you to Zachary Kline.
Hi Zachary , thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I moved to town six years ago after retiring from the Canadian football league. I spent most of college playing in punk bands between football practice and class . We would play for Whiskey and a place to sleep at frat parties and beach sidewalks in California where I’m from. I’ve always played in bands and wrote songs, but I wanted to see if I can stand up my own project and learn that side in Nashville.
Since being in town, I’ve been a side guy and an artist. Being able to see both sides of the coin has really made me appreciate the entire ecosystem of being a musician in the city. I’ve been really lucky to be a part of John Hollier’s project for the last 3 1/2 years It’s really taught me a lot about doing this thing the right way.
Currently, I’m releasing music under my solo project (Zachary Scott Kline) As well as a band, I started with the bass player (Ray Akers) of the Hollier project called Bronco Golden.
We’ve recorded an EP for bronco golden and I’ve recorded an EP from my own project as well both of which will be released this year. I’m really excited I can’t wait to see what the future holds
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Not at all. As it should be. Admittedly, even more than pro sports this has to be the biggest pipe dream I’ve ever ever had. This is an extremely extremely hard industry to get into that requires 100% focus and dedication to your craft every day all day. I Haven’t gone viral, or had any sort of TikTok success however I’ve spent my time in this town, touring small markets and trying to meet people at the merch booth. However, I’m learning how to create content that is more creative than soul crushing and I’m really excited for what I’m working on.
Half of the battle in this town and with this job is to continue to be inspired and not discouraged. What helps me is entirely my community of friends. I would have no sort of foothold in this city without my friends. I really do think you’re only as successful as your network and that takes time for genuine connection.
Another side is the money. I’ve had to rely on DIY everything. But that’s the reality. Part-time jobs odd jobs, side guy, work studio work, cutting grass bartending really, whatever to finance my project and life I’ve had to do as you most artist in Nashville.
I’m also a dad and married so fitting both lifestyles together can be interesting unique and extremely rewarding.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I moved to town to be a songwriter, but found myself being you as a guitar player. So I’ve always split time as both side guy and artist. I’m extremely proud of the work. I’ve done with John Hollier. I’m really excited for the record. He is putting out that I was lucky and grateful to be able to play guitar on.
I’m also extremely proud of my record. I released in 2022 titled drugs, Jesus and fireworks. It was my first Attempt at being an artist. I’ve grown since that release and the songs that have followed. I’m really excited to share. I believe this bronco golden project Fresh and interesting take on modern rock ‘n’ roll. So all in all, I have a ton of Irons on the fire that I’m really really passionate about.
The thing that sets me apart from other artists is my Ability not to stick with one genre or style. I really appreciate many different kinds of music and I strive to incorporate that in my sound as an artist or guitar player. They will always be a better singer or songwriter or guitar player than me so I have to be creative in different in order to separate myself.
So maybe we end on discussing what matters most to you and why?
Family and friends. This whole thing could go down in flames and I can Still be playing empty bars and all that matters is that I have a family to come home to. I would not be able to do any of this without my wife. Every good song every good show has been because of my community.
