Today we’d like to introduce you to Sarah Free.
Hi Sarah, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I have had the music bug ever since I was little. As a baby I was humming way before I could talk. In my toddler years, I started making up little songs about bath time or the dog; I always found a way to make everything musical. I started seriously writing songs in high school and building a catalog. It wasn’t until spring of my freshman year of college that I released my first single, “Driving” in 2021. I attended Lipscomb University and continued releasing music, graduating with a B.A. in Songwriting. I was originally going to college to become a music teacher, but my professors encouraged me to try the artist thing and now here I am! I now fully produce and write all of my own music. I love collaborating with others and ghostwriting as well. 4 years ago I began writing for sync and just got the news that I placed and sold my first song last week! When I’m able to tell I will all on my socials! I am now in the finial stages of production for my first self-produce album.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
The road has been anything but smooth! Most of my best music was written from some of the lowest points of my life. Many of my songs cover difficult themes such as abuse, heartbreak, and addiction. To me being inauthentic isn’t an option. Wether it’s something I’ve personally gone through or someone close to me has dealt with, I feel it all and believe it’s my duty to tell the story no matter how that means people perceive me. The music industry is extremely competitive and everyone wants to put you in a perfect genre mold, however I have been called somewhat of a pandoras box with my current discography. This reckless flow of creativity used to discourage me since I felt like everyone around me already had their sound. However it has only made me grow more as a writer and producer. All of that said, 2025 is THE YEAR FOR MUSIC!!
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I have always made my music out of necessity regardless of perfection. Many of my songs start as voice memo recordings or just baby beats on my laptop until they grow up into the songs you hear today.
I like to say I specialize in world building. People have told me that my music feels like being let into a secret world. This is a great outlet for me when everything feels too big; I can make my own peace in a pair of headphones and everything is okay for a second. If there’s an emotion there’s a whole world for it. I think what sets me apart is that I’m not chasing a sound; I’m chasing the whole feeling. This mantra will be amplified highly in my debut album where I dive nose-first to a place where nostalgia, EDM, and heart break intercept. I have plans to release the album before the end of this year, but the exact date is still tbd.
Because I am always creating, I also have plans to release a side project that is more raw guitar/vocal EP to the liked of Attic Abasement and Scruffpuppie.
I am also writing for sync music and I recently got my first placement, which felt very surreal! I can’t say exact details in on press, but it feels like my dreams are starting to come true!
What was your favorite childhood memory?
Once when I was around 4 or 5 my mom and I were jamming to “Unwritten” by Natasha Bedingfield in her car. Oftentimes we’d sing together and I’d ask her to explain what the lyrics meant. This was the first time my mom made me really THINK and decipher what the words meant to me. She was so patient to let me sit and figure it out. This was definitely a core memory and opened my mind to the thought of songwriting.
