Today we’d like to introduce you to David Dicks.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I moved to Nashville in 2008 to attend audio school at SAE and received my audio technology diploma with honors. I spent a couple years after that in the live sound world interning and freelancing but soon things shifted to more studio focus. I had worked on a couple projects in the studio but I had a couple songs land on some TV shows and I just got lost in all the possibilities with recording. I now have my own recording studio which I never thought would happen.
These days I work mostly with Nashville rock bands from my home studio with the occasional trip to music row to work in some of the world’s finest studios. I also currently have a band that I play drums in called Blackwood.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I have had a lot of fun and many great experiences. The struggle is how much competition/talent there is in this area. That is also a blessing with how many musicians are here but at times it’s hard not to feel like a small fish in a big ocean.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am the owner operator of Red Feather Recording. I help bands capture their sound through recording, mixing, producing and sometimes mastering their projects.
I have been told several times that the reason others like working with me is because of the relaxed vibe and how that translates to the results they get. I like to work organized so I think that makes everything easier on everyone else.
What has been the most important lesson you’ve learned along your journey?
I would say learning that everyone has a different personality and the small things matter. If someone is stressed out or nervous when they come into the studio you have to make time to make them comfortable while still working to get the results they want.
