Life & Work with Oluwafemi Olarubofin of Franklin, TN

Today we’d like to introduce you to Oluwafemi Olarubofin.

Hi Oluwafemi, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I began my career in the United States in 2009, shortly after legally migrating from a region where mental illness was heavily stigmatized and often misunderstood as a spiritual or moral failing. My very first job was in a group home, caring for an autistic patient. This experience stirred a deep curiosity and passion in me for mental health—a subject rarely spoken about where I came from.

Originally, I intended to pursue a career in business management, having already earned a bachelor’s degree in Management Science before relocating to the U.S. However, the early exposure to behavioral health care in my caregiving role inspired a pivotal career shift. I enrolled at Tennessee State University and earned my second degree in Nursing in 2016.

As a psychiatric registered nurse, I intentionally pursued work across a diverse range of mental health settings—including child and adolescent psychiatry, co-occurring disorders, forensic psychiatry, and geriatric care for individuals with cognitive impairment. Each setting deepened my understanding and strengthened my commitment to the field.

In 2019, I took a bold step forward and enrolled in the Doctor of Nursing Practice program at the University of Massachusetts, specializing in Psychiatric Mental Health. I knew that to make a lasting impact and drive meaningful change, I needed both advanced clinical expertise and the autonomy to lead.

After earning my doctoral degree, I worked at an outpatient mental health clinic while also consulting for the Social Security Administration. In 2025, I launched my private practice, Nolo Behavioral Healthcare, and began seeing patients in March. Within three months, I secured my own office space at 1650 Murfreesboro Road in Franklin, Tennessee.

That same year, I was honored by Today’s Nurse as a Top Psychiatric Mental Health Provider in Nolensville Tennessee where I was seeing patient virtually from the sunroom that I converted to an office space—an early but meaningful validation of the difference our practice was making in people’s lives.

Driven by a mission to educate, advocate, and destigmatize mental health, I have appeared on several podcasts and regularly share content on my personal and business social media handles—both personal and professional platforms—to raise awareness. My goal remains clear: to empower individuals to seek help, speak up, and realize that they do not have to suffer in silence.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Every journey comes with its own challenges and resistance. However, I never allowed those obstacles to derail me from achieving my goals. I’ve come to understand that there is no promotion without a test. These tests—whether personal, academic, or professional—have strengthened my mental fortitude and resilience. They’ve become the very foundation upon which I continue to build my purpose-driven career in mental health.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
My name is Femi Olarubofin. A father of three adorable children and husband to the most amazing woman in the world. She has been a constant support and allowed me to blossom and flourish in pursuing my lifelong goals and aspirations.

I am a Board-Certified Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP) and the Founder and CEO of Nolo Behavioral Healthcare. With over a decade of experience in the mental health field, I specialize in delivering high-quality, evidence-based care across a wide range of settings—including acute mental health, inpatient and outpatient behavioral health, long-term care, forensic psychiatry, and addiction medicine.

My journey has been rooted in purpose, resilience, and a deep commitment to breaking the stigma surrounding mental illness. I am a certified and highly sought-after consultant for the Social Security Administration, where I provide expert insight on mental health and disability assessments.

Notably, I pioneered the Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Department at TrustPoint Hospital in Murfreesboro, Tennessee—an initiative that expanded access to care for younger populations in need of specialized mental health services.

In 2025, I was honored by Today’s Nurse and my professional peers as a Top Psychiatric Mental Health Practitioner in Nolensville, TN. This recognition affirmed the growing impact of Nolo Behavioral Healthcare within the community and the lives we serve.

Outside of clinical work, I am passionate about public education and advocacy. I’ve been featured on several podcasts and YouTube platforms, where I speak on a wide range of mental health topics. Through my professional and personal social media channels, I share free educational content aimed at raising awareness, empowering individuals, and eliminating stigma.

So, before we go, how can our readers or others connect or collaborate with you? How can they support you?
A Call for Collaboration: Expanding Access, Empowering Communities:

At Nolo Behavioral Healthcare, we believe that mental health care should be accessible, compassionate, and community-centered. As a psychiatric mental health provider and founder, I firmly believe in the power of collaboration and referral. Working together with therapists, clinics, Employee Assistance Programs (EAPs), and insurance providers would enhances patient outcomes and reduces unnecessary emergency room visits.

Nolo Behavioral Healthcare is extending an open invitation to clinics, EAP programs, insurance companies, charitable organizations and donors, whose mission-aligns with Nolo Behavioral Healthcare to please partner with Nolo Behavioral Healthcare. Together, we can increase access, improve care coordination, and make mental health services more readily available to vulnerable populations.

We recognize the media as a powerful tool to raise awareness. Through podcast appearances, social platforms, and educational campaigns, we continue to shed light on the unprecedented mission of Nolo Behavioral Healthcare: to alleviate the suffering of those living with mental illness and eliminate the stigma that keeps so many from seeking help.

We’re also actively seeking investors and donors who believe in health equity. Our goal is to provide care to those without health insurance by developing a network of Community-Based Outpatient Clinics (CBOCs) throughout rural Tennessee and underserved communities. Each CBOC will include virtual care hubs—private telehealth rooms—to bridge the geographic gap and offer timely access to psychiatric services.

In addition, Nolo Behavioral Healthcare is planning on launching mobile mental health initiatives to reach individuals in their own homes—especially those living with severe mental illness who are often non-compliant due to the nature of their conditions. Research shows that patients with psychotic disorders such as schizophrenia or borderline personality disorder frequently miss scheduled appointments. By bringing care directly to their doorstep, we can intervene earlier, reduce crisis situations, and restore dignity to their care experience.

We welcome volunteers, partners, and organizations who share our vision. Together, we can change the landscape of mental health care in Tennessee and beyond. At Nolo Behavioral Healthcare, we believe in being our brother’s keeper—and that we are stronger together.
