Today we’d like to introduce you to Brooke Elliott.
Hi Brooke, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I started my photography journey during my senior year of college. My roommate wanted a senior session, and my now husband had a camera that he let me borrow to take them for her. I had so much fun, and it surprisingly came very natural to me. That same friend got married a couple months later, and I paid close attention to her photographer all day. After seeing her work and seeing the final images, I thought it would be so much fun to be a professional photographer. I reached out to that same photographer a couple months after my roommate’s wedding asking if she’d be willing to teach me some camera basics. She was kind enough to agree, so I would go to her house once or twice a week on my lunch break to learn the basics of my new camera. Fast forward four years, I am now shooting 15-20 weddings a year and it’s my full time career. I love everything about wedding photography, and I’m so grateful to that photographer who taught me back in 2020. Now, she is a very dear friend of mine, and we enjoy shooting together when we can.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Thankfully, I have had a very smooth road to where I am today. I had a wonderful full-time job that paid the bills while I invested in photography and learned everything I needed to know. By the time I was booking enough weddings and sessions to be able to do photography full time, my previous employers were beyond excited for me. They had watched me start at the very bottom, and it was such a relief to have a support system helping me get to where I am today. I also believe that I’ve had a pretty smooth road because the Lord has made it very clear to me that this is my calling.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I specialize in wedding photography and portraits. Most people know me for my bright and colorful editing style, and I think that is something that sets me apart from other photographers. So many photographers edit very warm, moody, or earthy now (which is stunning), but I have a lot of brides reach out to me because they were searching high and low for someone who edited more true to color and bright. I am most proud of the grind and dedication it took to get to this point. I remember shooting my first wedding for $800, and it blew my mind someone would pay me $800. Now, my brides are excited and eager to invest between $5,000-$9,000 in my work. It amazes me that so many beautiful couples value me and my work enough to do that. It’s always such an honor.
Is there something surprising that you feel even people who know you might not know about?
I actually have a Bachelor’s degree in Sport Management with a minor in Ministry. I planned on becoming a collegiate soccer coach one day because I played collegiate soccer myself. However, right after I graduated, I realized my true calling was photography.
