Rising Stars: Meet Caleb Coots of Bowling Green, Ky

Today we’d like to introduce you to Caleb Coots.

Hi Caleb, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Music has always been a part of my life. It has always been a part of my family. My grandfather is the great Eddie Pennington, and he has shown me everything I know. I started playing the drums and fiddle around the age of 5 taking lessons from my grandfather. As a family we would play many different shows. It wasn’t until I was about 10 when he started showing me how to play the guitar. I was taught what people call the Travis style picking. I have been playing guitar ever since then. I am now currently learning my way and working my way through the Nashville scene. Meeting new people and making great friends who can help me along the way.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
There are always struggles. My biggest struggle is self-confidence. I never seem to think that I am playing up to par with all of these other great musicians. I do my best but sometimes I feel my best isn’t going to get me where I want to be. When I get to thinking that way I sit and work at what I do and sometimes a little break will help as well.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
Here recently I was given the opportunity to play guitar in Kyle Eldrige’s band. That has become a pretty steady gig. I am not one to brag but there are not many people who try to stay close to the authentic Merle Travis style of playing. Being able to play similar to him is what I believe sets me apart as a player. While I can play Travis style, I am not able to do all of the fancy chicken picking and flat-picking stuff as well.

Can you talk to us a bit about the role of luck?
I don’t believe in good luck or bad luck. I believe that everyone has a purpose and a reason to be here on this earth. It is not based on luck. I am blessed to be able to do something that I love. God is the one who has opened up these doors for me. If I am not supposed to go down this road then the doors will be shut but I believe that this is my purpose in life. As long as I do the right thing and stay true then I know that everything will work out eventually.
