Conversations with Bee Smith

Today we’d like to introduce you to Bee Smith.

Hi Bee, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I am a country singer-songwriter from a small town in Lancashire, UK.

I have always had a passion for storytelling, and fell in love with country music for that very reason.

Some of my favourite country artists (and there are many!) include Ashley McBryde, Brad Paisley, Rascal Flatts, Jo-Dee Messina, Lainey Wilson, Miranda Lambert and Cody Johnson.

An eclectic taste in music, I grew up listening to artists such as The Carpenters, Mike & The Mechanics, Shania Twain, Joni Mitchell, Eva Cassidy, Jewel, The Beatles and many more.

I have been writing songs since I was 16 and performed my first original unreleased song at 17.

I took a break from performing when I became a Mama, and was frustrated that there wasn’t an audience for my love of country in the UK. My daughter is my inspiration, and I want to show her that with hard work and commitment, you absolutely can pursue your dream career!

I was signed to Buckshot Records in Louisiana and perform as an independent artist internationally.

My debut single, Little Girl’s Heart and following single Girls Like Me, Guys Like You have been nominated for both International Singer Songwriter Association and Josie awards, which I am so proud of!

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Growing up, my family had the opinion that singing ‘wasn’t a proper job’ and ‘I should pursue journalism’. Of course, as a kid you do as your told so I went to university to study that but that longing to write, sing and perform never left me. It’s in my soul. So last year I decided that it’s time to start living my truth. I posted a few videos of me singing online and here I am now! It’s never too late.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
When I first started to perform on the circuit many years ago, there wasn’t an audience for country music in the UK. It was frustrating having to perform pop singalongs just to get a gig. I started to think that maybe my dream wasn’t possible, and I’d have to just enjoy the odd karaoke.

Now things have changed, which is amazing. Country music has become more mainstream and I have the opportunity to write and sing what I really want. My truth. To an audience that wants to hear it. I have always written what’s on my heart. That’s country to me.

I’m so, so proud that my 2 singles are nominated for International Singer Songwriter and Josie awards. But I’m most proud of my resilience. For not giving up when most would.

So, before we go, how can our readers or others connect or collaborate with you? How can they support you?
I absolutely love to co-write! It’s so wonderful to get a different perspective on an idea and bring truth to a song that resonates with more people.
