Rising Stars: Meet Mackenzie Roberts of Franklin, TN

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mackenzie Roberts.

Hi Mackenzie, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
My name is Mackenzie Roberts and I am a Franklin, TN native. Born and raised! I’ve always had a passion for beautiful things, design, people, helping, and creating something from nothing! Right out of high school I went into the music industry. Songwriting and singing, glitz and guitars took up all of my time. I loved playing gigs, and getting the opportunity to play in various beautiful places. I married my husband in 2017 and began collecting heirloom china to use at the wedding. When the wedding was over, I began renting it out of a spare bedroom, because I loved it too much to get rid of. In between renting and washing the china I had collected, I began singing at more events, and pretty parties where I would see people deliver not only china plates, but tables, chairs, tents, stages, and more! “I coud do this”, I thought…And so it began… Mack Hatcher Events! My husband, Chad had no choice but to join me on this adventure, and I’m so glad he did. He fell in love with the logistics side of things, and became the glue that holds us together as a business. We haven’t looked back since and I couldn’t do this without him.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
We will turn 3 in March! It feels like we should be 100 by now, and I mean that in the best way! I can confidently say I learn something new every single day. Whether its good, or bad, we are learning! I’m thankful for that, because that shows me that we are continuing to grow as a business. We are so passionate about what we are doing, and that keeps us going. I will say, the road has been smooth in the sense of, “ok this is working, and we feel like we’re right where we need to be”. Statistically, many businesses fail within the first year. We say everyday “we’ve made it this far! We are not turning back now!”

Owning a business is definitley challenging. I’d say the struggles we have faced along the way air on the “backend” side of things. It’s figuring out taxes, and fees, and keeping up with your books, and bookings, and deliverying what you offer with excellence that no one truly warns you about before starting a business! Haha. It’s hard and you have to truly be on your toes to keep up. The event industry I think can also feel competitive. It can be a struggle when you’re not the best fit for a certain client, planner, or venue. Its a constant reminder you have to stay true to who you are, and trust that the right things will come your way and will be the perfect fit for what you represent and offer, and that is the greatest feeling when it does work out!

How do you think about luck?
My husband and I both grew up in Franklin, TN, where our business is based, so you could say we were very lucky for the relationships we had already established. We quickly got plugged into our community as new business owners and met a lot of great folks willing to help and support us. It’s not been all roses and sunshine, but I believe we are doing exactly what we’re meant to be doing, and we feel so blessed!

Owning a small business is hard. It’s amazing, and beautiful, but it comes with everyday challanges for sure. One being, you’re solely responsible for your own paycheck! Yikes! Haha. The thought of that is so awesome, but also so scary!!! We try not to say that we’re having bad luck necessarily, but rather see every situation or opportunity as a challenge, or hurdle that life has thrown. We’ve had some really big hurdles, but in all honesty, as hard as they were, we grew a lot from them. We definitely wish we didn’t have to learn some things the hard way, but sometimes that’s the way the cookie crumbles!

So I think “good” and “bad” luck is just a part of life, and it’s all in how you look at things. We make a concious effort to see the glass as half full within our life and business. It’s not always easy, but I promise when we choose to see things from that perspective, even if we don’t feel it, it always ends up working out. This business has grown us in our faith tremendously and we are so thankful to The Lord for walking it out with us!
