Today we’d like to introduce you to Maria Dumas.
Hi Maria, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I actually got started in photography very naturally—it’s something I’ve always been drawn to. Growing up, I was the one behind the camera, capturing family moments and everyday life. Looking back, the majority of the pictures in my family albums were taken by me. Over time, it became second nature to see the beauty in small details and to want to preserve those memories.
Later, when both of my daughters worked as child models, I was exposed to the professional side of photography. Watching the process up close taught me so much about what it takes to bring a brand’s story to life through images. That experience deepened my understanding of not just how to take a beautiful photo, but how to create one with purpose and intention.
So when I decided to step into photography professionally, it wasn’t a new chapter—it felt like a continuation of something I’d already been doing for years. Today, I feel just as passionate about capturing personal milestones for families as I do about helping brands tell their story. For me, photography is about trust, connection, and making sure every image reflects the moment or message it’s meant to hold.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I’d say the biggest challenge hasn’t been in doing the work itself, but in standing out here in Nashville. This city has become such a hub for creatives—musicians, actors, models, influencers, content creators, and of course, other photographers. With so much talent all around, the hardest part has simply been getting noticed in such a saturated space.
But I’ve learned that the key is connection. Networking, showing up, and genuinely getting to know people has opened so many doors for me. What I’ve found is that the creative community here is incredibly supportive—other photographers and artists have been so open and encouraging. So while it hasn’t always been smooth in terms of visibility, the relationships I’ve built have made the journey really rewarding, and I think that’s what’s helping me carve out my place.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
My work is really about storytelling through images. I specialize in capturing people in a way that feels bold, human, and full of life—whether that’s personal milestones, brand campaigns, or creative projects.
I think what sets me apart is the unique mix of experiences I bring into my photography. I spent 15 years working in the music industry, which taught me how to really listen to people, understand their vision, and translate it into something visual and impactful. On top of that, I’ve been surrounded by creativity for most of my life—my daughters were child models, so I’ve seen firsthand what it takes to bring a brand’s story to life. And with my background in the beauty industry, I’ve developed a sharp eye for detail, style, and presentation.
What I’m most proud of is being able to combine all those worlds into my work. The result is photography that feels authentic and genuine but also artistic and fun. My goal is always to create images that don’t just look beautiful but also connect with people and tell a story that lasts.
Let’s talk about our city – what do you love? What do you not love?
What I love most about Nashville is the energy of the city—there’s always something happening. Between the music, events, and creative gatherings, there are endless opportunities to capture moments that are full of life and personality. It’s an inspiring place to be as a photographer because there’s never a shortage of stories to tell.
On the other hand, because the city is so active and busy, projects can take a lot of planning and time. Patience really becomes key here, and I’ve learned how important it is to stay organized, take notes, and stay focused so I don’t get sidetracked. But I see that as part of the process—it keeps me sharp and intentional about the work I do.
