We recently had the chance to connect with Brina Kay and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Brina, thank you so much for joining us today. We’re thrilled to learn more about your journey, values and what you are currently working on. Let’s start with an ice breaker: What makes you lose track of time—and find yourself again?
This year, I did my very first camping trip. I really wanted to unplug and get off the grid, so I didn’t touch my phone for the entire three days we were out there. It was my first time sleeping in a tent outside. The experience was so rejuvenating, I would recommend it to anyone. Life as an artist can be hectic, and there’s nothing better for me than going out in nature to reset and recharge. I’ve always been into hiking and being out on a boat or near any body of water, but taking it one step further and truly immersing myself in the outdoors by sleeping outside and cooking food over a fire really gave me an extra boost. I hope to do more camping in the near future and would recommend it to anyone in the arts who needs to turn their brain on and off in order to get their creative energy back.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I am a songwriter, live performer and recording artist who creates country music with theatrical roots and pop sensibility. My storytelling style is equal parts heartfelt and cinematic, and I draws inspiration from icons like Natalie Maines, Kacey Musgraves, and Maren Morris—women who challenged the rules and made their own. I’m not just chasing dreams, I’m building worlds. With every release, I invite you to step into one that feels as massive as it is intimate.
Thanks for sharing that. Would love to go back in time and hear about how your past might have impacted who you are today. Who were you before the world told you who you had to be?
I was unapologetically myself as a child. Wild, outgoing, extremely opinionated, very passionate about everything. I didn’t care what people thought, I just did what I thought was right or would make me happy. As I approach my 30s, I feel like I have done a lot of work to reconnect with that part of myself. I explore that idea in my song “Dandelion.”
What did suffering teach you that success never could?
I think suffering has taught me how resourceful and resilient I can be, and it also taught me a lot about faith. Faith in my calling, faith in my own talent and work ethic, and faith in higher powers. I feel like in life often times you suffer so that you can grow, like how diamonds are formed under pressure. I like to think that every failure or hardship is preparing me for the life I’ve always dreamed of, so that when I finally get there, nothing will have the ability to knock me down.
Alright, so if you are open to it, let’s explore some philosophical questions that touch on your values and worldview. What are the biggest lies your industry tells itself?
That there’s a rule book or “formula” for success when it comes to art. At the end of the day, a label can run all the numbers, calculate the proper “song length” require a certain look to someone or number of social media followers, or try to replace us with AI, but true artistry and authenticity will always be in demand, and it can never be mass produced for profit alone. Consumers are smarter than they think, and time and time again they’ve shown that they’ll flock to what’s genuine, what’s moving, what’s human. Music and art existed way before the industry around it did. It’s innate in us. It means so much more than their bottom line. So when the industry puts the bottom line first, they lose what makes the music valuable in the first place.
Before we go, we’d love to hear your thoughts on some longer-run, legacy type questions. What do you understand deeply that most people don’t?
That time is our most valuable commodity. A lot of people act like it isn’t a finite thing, ticking away each day. People also act like they’ll be guaranteed a certain amount of it when they aren’t. For me, going through the pandemic really opened my eyes about that. Since then, I’ve prioritized my time above all else. Time with my family and friends, time traveling the world, time just having fun and enjoying life, is worth more to me than any dollar amount, award, or material thing.
