Life, Values & Legacy: Our Chat with Madison Wolfe of Downtown

We recently had the chance to connect with Madison Wolfe and have shared our conversation below.

Madison, really appreciate you sharing your stories and insights with us. The world would have so much more understanding and empathy if we all were a bit more open about our stories and how they have helped shaped our journey and worldview. Let’s jump in with a fun one: What is a normal day like for you right now?
I start off by snoozing my alarm about 1000x (lol) as I’m working nights in a restaurant right now. I never skip breakfast! Then I’m generally out the door for a write before I head to work as the lead hostess at a high end restaurant on Broadway!

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I’ve been doing music in some way shape or form since I can remember! I started humming before I talked and never really looked back. I took guitar lessons back home in Milwaukee Wisconsin at 13 and those lessons quickly turned into songwriting lessons with a local legend, Keith Pulvamacher. I went to Belmont University and got a Music Business degree, graduated in 2020 and I’ve been doing music full time since then! As an artist, I took college to really figure out who I wanted to be. I had released 2 EP’s and a single when I was younger, so it wad important to me to find my sound and my image as a country artist. I try to be as real, raw, and relatable as possible in my writing to show that there is truly a lot of healing in being resilient after struggles. I’ve battled with anxiety and endured a few traumas and I’d like to have my artistry represent the healing and the overcoming of my battles and burdens, as often, the specifics in songwriting is what makes the song universally relatable.

Amazing, so let’s take a moment to go back in time. Who were you before the world told you who you had to be?
I was always the loud, talking-over-the- teacher kid, but at the same time, I was a little shy and worried about if people liked me. I was so focused on my fears and fitting in that I never really let myself do anything fun or be who I wanted to be: the weird music kid who makes people laugh and was born to entertain! Don’t get me wrong, I still care way too much about how others perceive me, but to a world that tells little girls to sit down and be quiet… I say make noise!

What fear has held you back the most in your life?
The fear of never being good enough absolutely haunts me. As a kid I never felt good enough to be friends with the people I wanted to be friends with, I never was good enough at sports, I wasn’t smart enough.. always just on the cusp of being there but never quite feeling truly GOOD ENOUGH. As an adult, it’s just as hard! It’s a constant battle with myself to prove that I am good enough to be here doing this, being an artist. I know I’m overcoming it slowly, but I think it’s a normal fear for everyone.

Next, maybe we can discuss some of your foundational philosophies and views? Is the public version of you the real you?
Oh heck yeah! I try to be as real as I can online and at shows, because if I want people to relate to my songs, it starts with being a relatable person! I love to make people laugh and I swear I’m always entertaining people… on purpose or not! I don’t always wear makeup, I don’t have the best sense of style, my hair is almost always a frizzy mess of curls… but that’s REAL!

Okay, so before we go, let’s tackle one more area. Are you doing what you were born to do—or what you were told to do?
I think that God put songwriting and country music on my heart for a reason. I’m very thankful to have such a supportive family and I was never really told to do anything else. I think it’s because I had always made it so clear that I was made to be an entertainer and to touch people with music the way that the music of others has touched me.
