Life & Work with Cameron Gallagher of Hendersonville

Today we’d like to introduce you to Cameron Gallagher.

Hi Cameron, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I grew up in Park City, Utah, in a home where music was always playing. While I am the only musician in my family, we have always shared a deep love and appreciation for the arts. I started on guitar before switching to saxophone, inspired by my school district’s acclaimed jazz program. After auditioning and making the band, I focused all my energy on the sax. What began as a challenge quickly became one of the best decisions of my life.
In high school, I performed in my school’s renowned jazz band and joined the DownBeat Award-winning Caleb Chapman Soundhouse program, where I had the privilege of collaborating with world-class musicians including Jeff Coffin, Randy Brecker, David Paich, Jerry Cortez, Chris Bullock, Tom “Bones” Malone, Poncho Sanchez, members of the Dave Matthews Band, Lettuce, Big Bad Voodoo Daddy, Gordon Goodwin’s Big Phat Band, and Roy “Futureman” Wooten. Those opportunities took me around the world at a young age and deepened my love for music.

I went on to study jazz at the University of Utah under Kris Johnson, where I formed my first funk collective, Dangus Kong. During my time in Utah, I also began studying under and being mentored by Chase Baird, whose guidance continues to shape my playing and musical approach. Later, I started Cam Gallagher & The Tasty Soul, a band built on a mission of unity, positivity, and community. We aim to create an infectious energy in every performance, bringing people together through music and giving audiences an experience they can feel as much as hear. We performed extensively throughout Utah, connecting with audiences of all ages and backgrounds.

After earning my degree in Jazz Studies, I spent a year performing full time before moving to a larger music scene to continue my education. I attended Belmont University, studying under Dr. Alex Graham and Dr. Jeff Kirk, continuing my mentorship with Chase Baird, and apprenticing with Jeff Coffin. I earned my master’s degree in commercial music and have been based in Nashville for the past three years, performing, composing, arranging, recording as a session player, and teaching.

Today, I perform with my own group and as a sideman for other artists, bringing the same high-energy, community-focused, and positive experience to every stage. Being in Nashville, surrounded by world-class musicians, continues to inspire me and fuel my mission of connecting people through the power of music.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Pursuing a career in music is never a conventional path, and that has brought its own challenges. Early on, I often worried about how others viewed me, especially when I encountered people who demeaned the arts or saw them as less valuable. Luckily, I had an incredibly supportive family and community who believed in me. That support helped me focus on what truly matters, the joy of following my dream and the privilege of sharing my art with others every day.

The turning point came when I stopped listening to people who had strong opinions about my life but no real connection to it. Instead, I embraced the people who loved me and understood my vision, sometimes even more clearly than I did myself. That shift made me feel free, and it has been the fuel that keeps me moving forward no matter the obstacles.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am a highly driven musician known for my positive attitude, relentless determination, and high-energy performances. My mission is to unite people through music and to create an incredible sense of connection in every performance. I specialize in saxophones and woodwinds, composing and arranging, band leading, and music education.

One thing that sets me apart is my ability to bring the same level of passion and energy to every setting, whether it is an intimate private event, a large festival stage, or a classroom. I believe in meeting people where they are, creating moments that are both exciting and meaningful, and making sure the audience feels like they are a part of the performance. I am most proud of the fact that my work consistently brings people together and leaves them inspired.

Who else deserves credit in your story?
I am deeply grateful to my family, Kim and Spencer Gallagher, for always being there for me, believing in me, and working so hard in every aspect of their life, this has inspired me and driven me to make the most of every opportunity. I also want to thank my friends, former coaches, teachers, and especially my music educators who have guided and inspired me, including Chris Taylor, Kris Johnson, Alex Graham, Chase Baird, and Jeff Kirk. Their influence has shaped me not only as a musician but also as a person.
