Trystan Grisham shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.
Good morning Trystan, it’s such a great way to kick off the day – I think our readers will love hearing your stories, experiences and about how you think about life and work. Let’s jump right in? What are you most proud of building — that nobody sees?
My catalog of works. As an avid musician and songwriter, I am constantly creating new ideas for songs. Most get archived waiting for the right time or artist to arrive and give the song the soul it needs. Everyone gets to see what’s put out publicly, but most don’t see the years of work crafting with and for other artists, tweaking ideas to the point of being happy with an end product, or the sheer volume of works that stay in a folder until it is their time to shine. I have been given the opportunity to work with several amazing artists already writing and recording songs of all genres, and I look forward to growing that in the many years to come.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Trystan Grisham. I am a multi genre singer, songwriter, musician, and producer based in Nashville, TN. I love working with new and established musicians all the same, and live for the craft of making beautiful music. No genre is off limits, and ideas are allowed to flow freely. I encouraged the weird and under appreciated ideas to create the most authentic works an artist would like to share.
Okay, so here’s a deep one: Who were you before the world told you who you had to be?
I was simply a kid living in small town America. I grew up in the Midwest, Iowa to be exact. Life was slow and everybody knew everybody for better or worse. It’s a very humbling place to grow up. Everyone is your neighbor and is there to help in a time of need.
I had no motivation for what I wanted to be before finding music. I popped around from hobby to hobby looking for something to speak to me. Finally landing on a live DVD from the band KISS, I watched them perform and knew that’s what I had to do for the rest of my life.
What did suffering teach you that success never could?
Nothing good comes from things that are easy. Quality takes time, and any project that requires you to persevere will make you stronger after. Today’s society hinges on instant gratification. Things need to happen right now and fast. In the world of music, sometimes that can be achieved through social media such as a viral TikTok or building a social presence, but more often than not it is a slow build that takes a long time to get to somewhere you can be proud of. Learning instruments, practicing your craft of writing or producing, making connections, all of these things take years to master truthfully.
Alright, so if you are open to it, let’s explore some philosophical questions that touch on your values and worldview. Is the public version of you the real you?
I would like to think so. I strive to be as genuine with my art as I am a person walking the street day by day. I’ve known many to get caught up in a persona or become the character they were trying to play. While my stage presence is a bit exaggerated, I try to maintain the same authenticity on and off the stage.
Okay, we’ve made it essentially to the end. One last question before you go. What is the story you hope people tell about you when you’re gone?
I never gave up, and gave everything I had. No matter what level of success I am able to achieve in life, my goal is to always give everything that’s in me. Some call it inspirational, some call it being stubborn, nonetheless I am someone who doesn’t immediately give up at the sight of adversity. Pushing forward and finding my lane in every aspect of life is something I will always try to do.
