Story & Lesson Highlights with Dee Bartee of Franklin

We’re looking forward to introducing you to Dee Bartee. Check out our conversation below.

Dee, really appreciate you sharing your stories and insights with us. The world would have so much more understanding and empathy if we all were a bit more open about our stories and how they have helped shaped our journey and worldview. Let’s jump in with a fun one: What is something outside of work that is bringing you joy lately?
Well I just had a baby 8 months ago!

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Dee Bartee, and I am the owner of DeeBarteePhoto.com. I am a photographer with a passion for turning life’s fleeting moments into long-lasting memories. Photography has never just been a job for me-it’s my way of connecting with people, telling their stories, and preserving moments people can hold on to for the rest of their lives.

My journey began as a mom with three kids (at the time) who loved having pictures of them. I would constantly take them to have photos made for them anytime something happened in their lives. I found that I could never leave any photo behind; I loved them all, even the blinking ones. It grew to become quite expensive, though. One day, I was gifted a professional camera, and pretty much told; learn how to take pictures. So I did. Over time, I discovered that I had a real passion for taking pictures.

Here in Middle Tennessee, community is everything. I’m proud to be part of such a vibrant, beautiful place, and I strive to reflect that spirit in my work. My hope is that when you view my photographs, you’ll not only recognize a moment-you’ll feel it.

Appreciate your sharing that. Let’s talk about your life, growing up and some of topics and learnings around that. What breaks the bonds between people—and what restores them?
Betrayal of trust can often play a role along with a lack of communication, neglect, unresolved conflict, mismatched values, or goals. What restores them can vary for many reasons, and honest communication plays a big part. Taking responsibility, rebuilding trust over time, and forgiveness!

If you could say one kind thing to your younger self, what would it be?
Dear younger me, stop worrying that you are too much or not enough! Every awkward moment, every wrong turn, every quiet dream, is shaping you into someone you’ll be proud to be! Keep going, you are going to be more than okay!

Alright, so if you are open to it, let’s explore some philosophical questions that touch on your values and worldview. What are the biggest lies your industry tells itself?
Let’s see, Gear is everything! You have to follow the trends to be successful! Something I don’t often find myself doing! Youu can’t make a living doing what you love. EDITING CAN FIX EVERYTHING!!!!

Thank you so much for all of your openness so far. Maybe we can close with a future oriented question. What pain do you resist facing directly?
The ache of not feeling enough in someone’s eyes, or my own. The grief of letting go of a dream that I thought would define me. The loneliness that lingers even in a crowded room.
