Life, Values & Legacy: Our Chat with R-SON The Voice of Reason of Mt. Airy

We recently had the chance to connect with R-SON The Voice of Reason and have shared our conversation below.

Hi R-SON, thank you for taking the time to reflect back on your journey with us. I think our readers are in for a real treat. There is so much we can all learn from each other and so thank you again for opening up with us. Let’s get into it: What is a normal day like for you right now?
Get up, go to work, write rhymes in whatever chance moment I get, come home, chill, crash. Do it all again the next day.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
An old dude with Philly attitude, rhyme skills &true school flavor adds 2 degrees in Criminal Justice & 40 years of comic book nerdery? He puts a mic in his hands, links up with some of the dopest cats around &becomes R-SON the Voice of Reason! An MC’s MC, delivering extraordinary wordplay & freestyle fire, alone, with Mental Advisory &the World’s Greatest bluegrass hip hop band, Gangstagrass!

Appreciate your sharing that. Let’s talk about your life, growing up and some of topics and learnings around that. Who taught you the most about work?
My father.

When you were sad or scared as a child, what helped?
My mother died when I was 10 years old. The day of her funeral there were so many people there and they all showed us lots of love. I distinctly remember a conversation with my cousin Gene about my mom, who she was, what her family had been through and what she wanted for me. It got me through a lot of that time and when I finally really opened up about it, I went back to that moment as the impetus for really healing.

So a lot of these questions go deep, but if you are open to it, we’ve got a few more questions that we’d love to get your take on. What are the biggest lies your industry tells itself?
That quantity (sales and streams) equals quality.

Okay, we’ve made it essentially to the end. One last question before you go. If you knew you had 10 years left, what would you stop doing immediately?
Wasting time online.
