We recently had the chance to connect with Carl Wockner and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Carl , thank you so much for taking time out of your busy day to share your story, experiences and insights with our readers. Let’s jump right in with an interesting one: What do the first 90 minutes of your day look like?
Microwaved OATS in the car on the way to Pickleball.
Pickleball. OR breakfast with the family then to the GYM.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
Music is HARD! What I do used to be simple – I’m a solo, live looping performer from Australia based in Nashville TN, with red glasses.. I play original songs, mashup covers of most genres and travel all over the world for performances doing exactly this.
NOW I guess I’m more of a content creator – I spend most of my day filming or editing content for my socials, and in my “spare time” (if you can really call it that) I play shows.
Great, so let’s dive into your journey a bit more. What’s a moment that really shaped how you see the world?
I have a vivid memory of one of my FIRST ever live gigs where I was KILLIN it!! Had my eyes closed and was singing at the top of my lungs just absolutely melting this song and feeling on top of the world.
I play the last chord and finished the tune, looked up to the small crowd and 2 separate people caught my attention.
A 20 something woman sitting off to the right with her friends, who applauded loudly and later came up to say she was blown away, was a new fan and that I performed a beautiful rendition of a favorite song of hers.
The second was a guy sitting at the opposite end of the table talking through my whole set and staring over my shoulder, captivated by the football game on the giant TV by the stage.
Point is – Some people GET IT, and some people DON’T.
I could try and entertain that second guy until I’m blue in the face but for what! – I’d rather focus on the right people, with the right vibe and interest! They fill up my cup.
Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
Once a month, every month for the last 25 years.
I wanna hinge on the word “almost” though. There aren’t many industries where you feel like you’re going against the grain MOST OF THE TIME! But here we are and here I am!
Taylor Swift Says “never feel like you’re entitled to anything in this business” which makes a lot of sense. Its so tough when sometimes you feel like you deserve a win, only to see another artist who’s lazy or barely played a gig end up winning some crazy opportunity you would literally kill for – and its an even harder lump to swallow when you meet them a year later and they gave up cus its all too hard….
I’m here for the long haul – and for my real fans, and the music lovers.
So a lot of these questions go deep, but if you are open to it, we’ve got a few more questions that we’d love to get your take on. What would your closest friends say really matters to you?
Pickleball and Cold fresh Watermelon.
Also music and Family. But beyond that I guess proper honesty, face time (real no the screen version) and a sense of humor.
Okay, so before we go, let’s tackle one more area. Have you ever gotten what you wanted, and found it did not satisfy you?
It’s summer, so… FRUIT season! HUGE fan of peaches. Nice yellow, Georgia Peaches. I loaded up a whole bag in the grocery store. waited a few days for them to FINALLY ripen. GROSS!!!! they were soft and floury, no flavor or ANYTHING like peaches are supposed to be. I was legitimately devastated!
Relating to music I guess I’m pretty desensitized to things falling short of expectations. Especially in the recording industry when I pour my heart and soul into some new musical release – while I get the satisfaction of the product and what it means to me, I often lost money on the whole project being an independent artist trying to compete with music streaming giants signed to Major labels.
