Life, Values & Legacy: Our Chat with Dr. Alexandria Phillips

We recently had the chance to connect with Dr. Alexandria Phillips and have shared our conversation below.

Alexandria, really appreciate you sharing your stories and insights with us. The world would have so much more understanding and empathy if we all were a bit more open about our stories and how they have helped shaped our journey and worldview. Let’s jump in with a fun one: What is something outside of work that is bringing you joy lately?
Outside of work, I’ve started riding again! I recently bought a new horse named Pickle, and I’m training him on barrels. When I was younger, I absolutely loved barrel racing—I’m a bit of an adrenaline junkie—so getting back into it has been such a fun adventure.

On top of that, I got engaged in April, and we’re planning a May 2026 wedding. I say “planning,” but truthfully, my amazing mom and best friend are handling most of it while I get to sit back and enjoy (I’m definitely not the planner type!).
Life is also exciting on the home front—we just bought 10 acres in Chapel Hill, TN, and are beginning the process of building a house. We’ve loved our time in Nashville and Franklin, but we can’t wait to enjoy the peace and quiet of the country.
And of course, my three dogs—Otto, Lyla, and Griffey—bring me endless joy every day.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I’m the owner of Amplify Health and Performance, a concierge physical therapy and wellness clinic. We take a very hands-on approach and use cutting-edge modalities like focus shockwave, dry needling, and K-laser. Our clinic is located inside a fully equipped gym, and we also provide home visits in Leiper’s Fork, Franklin, and College Grove.

I created Amplify Health and Performance because I didn’t want to work in an environment where people weren’t getting the care they truly deserve. We don’t contract with insurance (though we do accept HSA/FSA and provide superbills) so that we can focus on delivering one-on-one, individualized care every time. Our clients often describe us not just as physical therapists, but as orthopedic consultants—a trusted first stop for their wellness health concerns. In addition to cutting-edge therapies, we also provide strength and personal training, and we’re backed by an amazing network of doctors to support every aspect of performance and wellness.

Okay, so here’s a deep one: Who taught you the most about work?
I’m blessed to have numerous positive influences in my life, all of whom have instilled in me the profound value of hard work. My grandpa, in particular, shines as a guiding light in this regard. When I was a young girl, he underwent a heart transplant—an event I don’t vividly recall, but I was told he wasn’t expected to live a long life. Yet, what I witnessed was far different from that prognosis. He ran a farm with dedication, nurtured a community garden, trained dogs, managed cattle, rode horses, and embraced his role as a devoted grandpa. While my parents were out demonstrating the importance of working tirelessly to sustain our family, he looked after my sister and me, teaching us through his actions. What made him truly remarkable was the joy he found in everything he did, no matter how demanding the task. I think that’s what the problem with today’s generation is—people often equate hard work with merely staying busy, which is the exact opposite of what he embodied. My grandpa showed me that true hard work is about pouring your heart into what you love, finding purpose in every effort, and building a deeply fulfilling life

If you could say one kind thing to your younger self, what would it be?
Suffering taught me grit and how to roll with the punches in a way success never could. Life’s messy—deal with it and move on. Perfection’s a joke, especially in business. Those “perfect” entrepreneurs? They crack me up. Have fun faking it, champ! Mistakes are constant, but suffering showed me how to keep going, no matter what. That saying, “It’s not how many times you fall, but how many you get up”? Nah. It’s about pushing forward—crawling, stumbling, whatever. People who’ve never struggled miss that lesson and stay stuck. Suffering taught me to laugh at the chaos and keep moving, no matter the mess.

Sure, so let’s go deeper into your values and how you think. Where are smart people getting it totally wrong today?
Smart people today are getting it wrong by chasing an exhausting, performative version of success that’s more about appearances than substance. They need to take a deep breath and slow down. There’s this pervasive myth, fueled by social media, that being “smart” means filling your day with an absurd checklist: 14 hours of sleep for “optimal brain function,” a three-hour workout to sculpt the perfect physique, reading 400 pages of a self-improvement book, recording a 30-minute podcast that only a handful of loyal listeners (like your mom) tune into, and somehow still having energy for meaningful family time. That’s not what smart people do—it’s what people do when they’re desperate to prove they’re working harder than everyone else. The real issue is that too many intelligent folks are caught up in this trap of showcasing their every move online, seeking validation from strangers instead of focusing on what truly matters. Don’t get me wrong—reading is incredible; it’s a powerful way to grow, learn, and escape. So, absolutely, keep reading. But do it for yourself, because it sparks curiosity or joy, not to check a box or impress an audience. Work out because it supports your health and mental clarity, not to broadcast your discipline. Smart people are missing the mark when they let external approval dictate their choices. The candid truth? Just be your best self—authentically, quietly, confidently—and savor the freedom of living a smart life on your own terms, without the need to prove it to anyone.

Okay, we’ve made it essentially to the end. One last question before you go. If you knew you had 10 years left, what would you stop doing immediately?
If I had just 10 years left, I’d strip my life down to what truly matters and stop wasting energy on anything—or anyone—that doesn’t align with who I am. I’d keep working because I genuinely love my job, but I’d draw a hard line against tolerating nonsense. Those who’ve been rude, stirred up chaos, or thrown hurtful words my way while I grinned and bore it? Sorry, you’re cut from the schedule. No more pretending. And those who acted like their business was too big, their time too precious to grab a coffee or nurture a relationship we once had? I wouldn’t waste a single text checking in on them. Life’s too short for one-sided connections.

Instead, I’d pour my heart into being the person I know I’m meant to be. I’d help others selflessly and dive deeper into hobbies that light me up, like riding horses. I’d give my all to my clients, going above and beyond to support them, no matter the cost. I’d cherish every moment with my family, my fiancé, and my dogs, making memories that matter. Above all, I’d build a legacy of peace—something that can unfortunately be missing in the chaotic world of running a business. That grind, that lack of calm? It needs to change, and I’d make it my mission to live with purpose, authenticity, and tranquility, leaving behind a ripple effect of kindness and connection.
