Today we’d like to introduce you to Abby Vaden.
Hi Abby, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I grew up facing challenges that most kids never imagine. Much of my childhood was spent in and out of hospitals battling SCID, a life-threatening immune disorder. While other kids were thinking about sports and sleepovers, I was focused on surviving surgeries, treatments, and the uncertainty of each day. Those years taught me resilience, empathy, and a deep appreciation for second chances.
As I got older and regained my health, I became determined to make my story mean something. I enrolled at Middle Tennessee State University, where I majored in Communication with a focus on Social and Cultural Influences. During college, I became passionate about using my voice to empower others — volunteering, speaking at conferences like RiseUP Womenpreneur, launching my podcast Defying the Odds, and working in marketing to help local businesses thrive.
Today, I’m channeling everything I’ve lived through into building a career that blends storytelling, advocacy, and entrepreneurship. My journey hasn’t been linear or easy, but it’s shaped me into someone who can meet people where they are and remind them that even the hardest chapters can be rewritten.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road. My life has been marked by challenges from the very beginning. Growing up with SCID meant countless hospital stays, transplants, and treatments that pushed me to my physical and emotional limits. Even when I wasn’t in a hospital bed, I lived with the fear of “what if,” and that kind of uncertainty can take a real toll.
Beyond my health, I’ve faced the struggle of proving myself in spaces where people didn’t always see the battles I had already fought. There were times I felt behind my peers — like I was playing catch-up socially, academically, or even just in everyday life experiences. Transitioning into adulthood, I also had to navigate balancing my health needs, work responsibilities, and my desire to chase big dreams without burning out.
But those struggles shaped me. They taught me perseverance, patience, and the importance of leaning on my support system — my family, my husband, and my faith. Every setback became part of the foundation that helps me stand stronger today.
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
My work is really rooted in resilience and storytelling. Through my podcast, Defying the Odds, I focus on women empowerment and sharing stories of strength, survival, and perseverance. It’s a space where I not only share my own journey, but also highlight the voices of others who have faced obstacles and found a way forward.
In addition to the podcast, I work in marketing, helping small businesses and organizations grow their presence through creative campaigns, branding, and community engagement. What sets me apart is that I don’t just look at marketing as numbers or strategies — I see it as an opportunity to tell someone’s story in a way that connects with people on a deeper level. My background, both personal and professional, has given me a strong sense of empathy and authenticity, and that really shines through in the way I approach my work.
I’m most proud that my brand represents realness. Whether it’s empowering women through my podcast, supporting local entrepreneurs, or offering services like notary and consulting, I stay true to the values of honesty, resilience, and connection.
What I want readers to know is that everything I do — from media to marketing to advocacy — is built around one core mission: to remind people that no matter what they’ve gone through, their story matters, and it has the power to inspire change.
What does success mean to you?
For me, success isn’t about titles, money, or recognition — it’s about impact. I define success as living in alignment with my purpose and using my story to inspire and uplift others. If my journey gives someone else hope, encouragement, or the courage to keep going, that’s success.
On a personal level, success is also about balance — being able to chase my dreams while still making time for my family, my husband, and my five fur babies. It’s about building something meaningful without losing sight of the little everyday moments that make life full.
At the end of the day, I believe success is measured less by what you achieve for yourself and more by how many people are better because you were here.
