Story & Lesson Highlights with Morgan Alexander of Donelson

We’re looking forward to introducing you to Morgan Alexander. Check out our conversation below.

Morgan, so good to connect and we’re excited to share your story and insights with our audience. There’s a ton to learn from your story, but let’s start with a warm up before we get into the heart of the interview. What do the first 90 minutes of your day look like?
Spending those few precious moments with my wife before the day starts always coffee. I’m a sucker for some early morning SportsCenter most likely get up with my Greenberg preparing for the day ahead whether it’s a show put together a set list, social media post or a day off where I’m generally doing business clerical work Writing songs or even just taking a personal day to reset then of course laundry

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
When somebody asked about what I do or my brand I always like to say my brand is connection. My brain is connecting whether it’s through writing a song performing on a stage and seeing an event working with Radio partners it’s all about connection I think my favorite thing about doing a live show whether it’s downtown Broadway and Nashville, Tennessee or For a small group of people for a private event the opportunities I get to connect with individuals or groups based on where they’re from what they’re currently doing in their lives and getting the chance to bring Music into that has always made what I do such an ever-growing creative outlet to just be better every day currently, I’m working on many things working with one of my Radio partners starting a new radio program where I will provide the musical entertainment for the show I’m also currently working on building a label that will release and produce multitudes of genres of music including ones currently produced or recorded by me and written and compose by me so I’m very excited to have that hit the digital airwaves soon one of my favorite things. I’m currently also doing, especially in my life performances is creating short moments where I take whatever is happening in the moment and improvise a full structured song with lyrics and chords and solos and stuff, especially if there’s abandoned involved, it really has become a great exercise mentally when it comes to writing songs outside of performances, but yet also still another way to connect to the people that allow me to do this for a living

Great, so let’s dive into your journey a bit more. What part of you has served its purpose and must now be released?
To answer that question, I simply have to say self doubt and anxiety. There’s nothing more debilitating than not believing in yourself nor not listening to those that believe in you it’s hard sometimes to see yourself the way others may see you or even the way you should see yourself, but the best thing you can do is wake up every day and say today is going to be my best day each and every day One thing at a time I always tell my wife, we can only control the things that we can control and just remember that you are important because you matter in every part of your life and every person that you come in contact with that also matters so yeah, getting rid of self down an anxiety, and with that I will give myself the Grace needed to do that

What did suffering teach you that success never could?
The power and suffering is learning sometimes with success. You turn a blind eye to the things that you could’ve done better, but as a musician, we all tend to suffer in our own selves. Hence, we always tend to self reflect on what we had done whether it’s a performance or a composition that we had written, I think generally the best of us all have a tendency to reflect maybe even more than we should so, yes, that comes with balance, but suffering will teach you more than success. Success comes with the suffering, and it doesn’t happen the same way for everyone.

Alright, so if you are open to it, let’s explore some philosophical questions that touch on your values and worldview. Is the public version of you the real you?
The public version is a version of me and some of it is mostly real, but like many people we all have our disconnects. I definitely love to quiet down after a performance where I have been very extroverted or engaged the introvert in me comes out extremely after a performance and that’s something that I’ve learned to grow and expand when it comes to staying in the moment and being myself, but also being What a performance or the music calls for because there’s nothing like putting on a good show and knowing that people are really enjoying themselves you tend to get a rush from that organically and that’s something that having the balance in can be very beneficial in life, but I would say all in all you’re at least getting 50% of me

Before we go, we’d love to hear your thoughts on some longer-run, legacy type questions. Are you doing what you were born to do—or what you were told to do?
I am definitely doing what I was born to do, but I think there are still variations in what I was born to do. I think I was given a gift to do what I do and I do feel very blessed to do that, but it doesn’t mean it’s the only thing I was put on this earth to do For instance I know I was put on this earth to be a father. I think we were all put on this earth here to be accountable human beings to not only ourselves by each other. I don’t think they are will be a day that goes by that you won’t fail in some way but it’s how you don’t fail again in the same way that counts.
