Conversations with Jimmy Cahill

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jimmy Cahill.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
At the age of 41 and in the interest of health benefits, I was a regular at our local gym. During one session I noticed a flyer promoting a “Reality-based Mixed Martial Art Street Fighting System”…color me intrigued!

I began my Kenpo journey under Grand Master Brian Oakes and became his first Black Belt in his newly developed system. Throughout my training with GM Oakes, I developed and implemented a youth curriculum.

In 2016 I incorporate the Green Dragon Martial Arts school in my hometown of Chapel Hill, TN and have been serving the community ever since!

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Martial arts is a niche market. Although the youth class has continually flourished, the adult class has had it’s ebbs and flows. As the adult curriculum is exponentially more violent than the youth’s path, it takes a particular mindset to participate.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am a Federally Licensed Customs Broker and currently the Customs & Foreign Trade Manager, NA for BASF Mobile Emissions Catalysts based in Huntsville, AL.

Where we are in life is often partly because of others. Who/what else deserves credit for how your story turned out?
Obviously my instructor GM Oakes but my greatest motivator has been the legions of families within my community that I have been able to share my passion and joy within the martial arts! There are many benefits to training in martial arts, especially with children…they gain confidence, teamwork, trust, leadership et al.

The cornerstone of the school is based on “Honor, Respect and Self-Discipline”…values which benefits all aspects of life!
