Kelly Motley shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.
Kelly, we’re thrilled to have you with us today. Before we jump into your intro and the heart of the interview, let’s start with a bit of an ice breaker: What do you think is misunderstood about your business?
Initially when someone is thriving and growing their business, from the outside it may look as though, “they have it all together. ” When in reality– it’s simply not true. Everyone is going through struggle both personal and in their careers regardless of how it may look. Life is a huge learning experience and you can’t ever stop regard less the battle.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Kelly the face behind KMB Studios, also known as Kellymade Lash & Wax. I started as a girl with a dream, lashing for fun in my living room. Fast forward 8 long years and I am now the proud owner of a 1,ooo sq ft salon storefront. Offering 2 beauty suites for other professionals, as well as, an additional luxury lash and body waxing room for my own clients. We have a permanent jewelry station, tooth gem specialist and even business coaching opportunities. We are providing a safe space for you and all your confidence needs.
Appreciate your sharing that. Let’s talk about your life, growing up and some of topics and learnings around that. What breaks the bonds between people—and what restores them?
For me, everything is about communication– especially in the business world. When you are up front and honest the situation is always more forgiving. If you show you are willing to open up and talk about said situation then that in itself will provide a true bond and trustworthy relationship. Strong bonds and support systems are necessary when being an entrepreneur.
Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
Everyday. No matter whether I am going through something personal or professional it can still affect my business regardless. How I feel, how I move, how I react. Is everything to the people I attract and the clientele that returns. Giving up is easy. Finding someone to tell you when to clock in and when to go home is easy. The hard part is staying dedicated to yourself and your dreams as an artist. If you stay true to yourself, follow your heart and do good by people, you will succeed.
I think our readers would appreciate hearing more about your values and what you think matters in life and career, etc. So our next question is along those lines. Is the public version of you the real you?
Yes! I take pride in people knowing exactly who I am before even meeting me. I have clients who say, “I have followed you for months before I booked and you are the same person today as I see on social media.”
That is everything to me. Knowing someone can trust me from watching me on instagram or Facebook. The way we can market ourselves so easily these days is what sets the successful ones apart from the people who give up, in my opinion. We have it way too easy.
Okay, so let’s keep going with one more question that means a lot to us: If you retired tomorrow, what would your customers miss most?
I could brag so much on how dedicated my clients are to me. Not only my safe, healthy extensions but also my dedication to their happiness. The way we accommodate for one another’s schedule hiccups. The way w2e laugh together but also cry. The way we can disagree and talk it out like real sisters! I would hope they would miss my smile and my honest, fun personality.
