Today we’d like to introduce you to Sue Mohr.
Hi Sue, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
Over the years, I’ve found that creatives and entrepreneurs have a hard time sorting through barriers in both their life and business. So, through life and business coaching, I help them create customized plans so they can do what they love to do the most, create!
How did this all start? With my daughters.
Three little girls, who had big talent. One day they came to me and said, ‘Mom, we want to start a band.” Haha. I loved their entrepreneurial spirit and their belief in themselves. So I helped them. Long story extremely short … they received a record contract and we moved to TN. My sweet daughters received a contract with Hollywood Records and what a blessing to see the fruition of their efforts. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Everlife
Along the way, I managed not only them, but many other bands in TN. Helping and supporting them to the next level in their careers.
I’ve always had a creative mind and spirit.
Taught drama, had an antique/craft business called Through the Looking Glass, have written many stories and articles for publication, been both traditionally and self-published, am an ordained minister and have 3 ministries that I run (one is a local writing group called The Crooked Crown Writing Society), owned a mission organization called The Pilgrims of Hope that took evangelical drama to the streets in many countries with young adults and I had the honor of seeing lives changed becoming a better human along the way, have been a motivational speaker for women’s organization, am an Enneagram teacher and advocate of knowing how to respond instead of react, working in the world of film, I’ve sat in the role of Executive Director for a TV show in Franklin, TN for over 15 years, and was in the field as an Associate Director for a TV show called Good Guys, along with other roles in the media world. I even have one of those fancy Telly Awards for script-writing.
My heart for people is built into my faith. I’ve written and taught a curriculum for women over 50 entitled FiftyNess. It parallels the stories of women in the bible and history with the women of today. There are answers to life in the stories of people. Uncovering them is part of the discovery process.
My story has a vein that runs through it that never changes. I love people. Some of my friends say I collect them:) Along the way, it’s true, I’ve gathered people. It’s been said that I’ve never met a stranger.
I’m a story teller at heart, and I don’t believe we have been created to (always) create alone, so I’ve always loved connecting creatives with each other. That essence of storytelling has led me full circle. I am using my gifts to support causes and change the way people see, hear, and think.
The creative spirit runs deep. Because of it, retirement is not in my future. I love what I do and can’t even imagine a day without creating in some way, shape, or form.
Taking a break among my pages to be a mom to three lovely ladies was the greatest accomplishment of my life. Watching them grow and walk confidently into their own stories is my true success. Today I have the pleasure of being a grandma to three grand-littles. A new generation is being written in my book.
Today you can find me living life large with my husband, Keith in our little town of Spring Hill, TN. I love to travel, take photographs, write, spend precious time with family, and more than anything, curl up with new stories from amazing and talented authors.
Every day is a new day. A new story to be written.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
That is definitely a hot question, lol.
Life is full of struggles. The thing about them is, what do you do with them.
I’ve never been one to look at a struggle with contempt. It’s just another problem to solve. We can’t let them overpower us or stop us from moving forward.
My clients will attest to this, I tell them to never bring a ‘struggle’ to the table without at least 3 solutions.
What were some of my struggles? Oh, the usual. Rejection was one. As a writer, I learned to embrace the rejections. They actually empowered me to keep going.
There were struggles with technology. Gee whiz, so many advancements over the past 6 decades. But, in due time, I’ve semi-mastered, haha, most of them.
Sometimes there were financial struggles with all that was needed to build my career…but it’s been pretty amazing. If there was something that needed to be done, I found a way. I’ve always found a way!!!
I’ve found that my struggles have re-shaped my strength, they were stepping stones that built up my faith.
And each challenge held a lesson, each obstacle a hidden opportunity. This is one of the things I’ve taught my daughters and have passed onto my clients. Look in every nook and corner. Opportunities are there. We just need to uncover them.
My biggest advise to myself through the years were the words of Winston Churchill, “Never give up!”. That’s become my mantra. Anyone that knows me would say that’s true. I don’t believe in giving up.
As a matter of fact, I homeschooled my daughters and one day asked them to get all the dictionaries in the house. (Yes, we had physical dictionaries:) Then I instructed each one of them to cut out the word ‘can’t’. It had no place in our lives. There are still holes where those words were in those books. This was a huge, aha moment in their lives and mine.
My struggles are proof of what I was capable of. Reminders that even in the hard places, I can grow, learning, and become more resilient.
Struggles. Yep, I’ve had many. But I can tell you the answer to this question that I ask every client.
“Name one thing you haven’t made it through.”
NOTHING. ‘Cuz if there was something, I wouldn’t be talking to you today:)
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
The professional answer is :: I am a life / business coach, specializing in services for creatives and entrepreneurs. Using the enneagram and other tools to help them build implementable plans. As an author, I also support writers through coaching and consulting, even co-writing and ghost-writing.
The creative answer is :: I’m a creative that wants to see other creatives win! My client’s wins are my wins. What a high it is when someone that I coach has been published. Or their business has a positive cash flow. Then there are times when a family sees how they can love, respect, and understand themselves better through my enneagram coaching services. Marriages have turned around with my support and I’ve seen families recenter themselves to true North.
I believe the answer to what I’m known for is, ultimately, I believe in people. I believe in their talents, their drive, and their potential. I believe in their “can.” My mission is to empower individuals to unlock their strengths, overcome obstacles, and achieve the success they deserve.
It’s so satisfying to see their smiles.
It’s even more so to see them live what they are learning through my support and to pass it on to others.
That’s my true legacy.
What were you like growing up?
If curiosity got the cat, then I was the cat.
I was curious about everything. An avid reader. An adventurer. If I had a question about something, you would soon find me on a quest to find the answer.
Mom would say I was a ‘hyper-active’ child. Haha, I have to laugh at that now. She wasn’t wrong. I bounced off the walls as soon as the sun came up. There was so much to learn and so little time!
One word to describe what I was searching for was Joy! Joy was sustenance to me. I had to have it. I looked under those proverbial rocks to find it, jumped in puddles to discover it, laughter filled my soul, and if someone didn’t have a smile, I gave them mine.
I was an avid reader from the moment I could read. Traveling to far away places one page, one story at a time. I just couldn’t get enough. On Saturday’s, you would find me at the library, borrowing yet another big stack of books and balancing them all the way home.
I’m the sister of one sister. Patti. Her and I would create stories together. We loved comic books and would pretend we were the characters.
As life would have it, I was the extrovert. I don’t even understand how people can be bored. There is ALWAYS something to do in this life.
Childhood held its challenges, but just like everything I’ve done in life, I learned from every one of them.
I’m sure there will be more in the future.
In his late 80’s Michelangelo would write these words at the bottom of his paintings, “Ancora Imparo’. And Yet, I still learn:)
