Exploring Life & Business with Sota Koy of skin by sota

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sota Koy.

Hi Sota, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I made a career change in 2014 and began esthetics school in Seattle, Washington at the Gary Manuel Aveda Institute. In 2019 I completed my CIDESCO certification in Saint Paul, Minnesota which is the highest and grueling global degree an esthetician can receive. This diploma allowed me to receive training in massage, nail care, body treatments, and advanced facial treatments. After working for several spas from graduation across two states, I went independent and opened up my first solo suite in 2020 and eventually launched in Nashville in February 2022.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Running a small business means wearing many hats. It was easy to get lost in all of the logistics while also being a service provider. Then I ran into some health issues and had to shut down for a year in the summer of 2023. Having to start over in 2024 was tough but I was also very excited and determined to pursue my passion of being an independent esthetician again.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
I specialize in a variety of facials, skin care focused body treatments, and brow shaping using gentle, hard wax. I’m recently known for my buccal massage signature facials which address a variety of therapeutic concerns like TMJ/jaw tension, sinus issues and more. I’m proud of my humble space and the intention of relaxation and care I put forth in all of my services. Focusing primarily on facials, my goal is to be my client’s guide and resource throughout their skincare journey.

What matters most to you?
I moved to Nashville by myself and was virtually alone. Couple that with running an independent business, it was difficult to find community and a sense of belonging. I eventually found that in API Middle Tennessee, a non-profit that works towards racial justice by building API community, lifting API voices, and celebrating API identities. I felt supported in a time where it was easy to feel a bit lost in a new city with a new business. Now I serve on their board and hope to keep building my business to be a platform to continue lifting up others the way that I was.
