Today we’d like to introduce you to Michael Ubaldini.
Hi Michael , thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Started playing guitar age 7 – Father showed me Hank Williams and Ray Charles songs on guitar-
I always new when I was a small kid round first grade I just knew I was supposed to write songs and play songs -It was real natural -I did not choose it , It chose me -Beatles ,Hank Williams ,Creedence,Ray Charles ,I was already listening to that and singing and learning guitar.I knew I was supposed to before I could do it.knowing I could do it..
Music and writing was something that was as natural as breathing to me.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
No my road has never been smooth ,
The Road has not been smooth at all – my whole life’s been a struggle. My first tour self made was in The UK at 18.I knew nothing about work visas, I heard Chrissie Hynde went there so I thought I would too, Saved my money sold some gear and split. They wouldn’t let me in through customs. They threw me in a holding room with barbed wire around it for the weekend-I was with all the other immigrants of all stripes, Jamaicans, Middle Eastern folks, European whites, and hard cases & criminals too. Glad I met them. Talking with most of them they all wanted to know about The States excited to hear what it was like-It all finally got cleared up and I got into England – funny when they drove all us Immigrants to lunch it was in a type of van & bus with a cage. They fed us bad TV type frozen dinners & a loaf of bread being passed around. I decided I wasn’t hungry. That was more of an adventure than a struggle but you had to keep your eyes open.
As for struggles – I was born with a bad heart valve -It was replaced when I was real young – then in 2009, I suffered a hemorrhagic brain bleed caused by endocarditis from a rare infection that got on the valve only 20 people in medical history had that happen. Was told I’d never play or walk again -But I wound up making a full recovery – then in 2015 I collapsed and was dead onstage -but luckily my friends were there two who were in medical field saved my life onstage was another freak health thing but once again I endured. Those were miracles .Jesus reached his hand and pulled me through-I wrote the song Lazarus blues about it I’m out there playing away.
I’m all about overcoming obstacles and struggle- a lot of others can relate, I guess that’s why they like my songs .I perform solo acoustic guitar and harmonica – folk style and also with a band.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
Songwriting and singin’ and bangin’ round on that ol’ guitar and harmonica and writin’ songs .
I don’t write or record on computers or any of that .No AI , no multi tracking ,click tracks etc.. nothing is fake with me .
People see authenticity when they see and hear me .People throw that word authentic around but when its real and right there in their face they either dig it or it scares the shit out of em’
That’s when they’ll try to throw stones in your path usually behind the scenes, but stones are easy to kick out of your way. People are all image and nothing more these days for social media cliques , Pop music has really become sequin gowns and high fashion sports jackets on the red carpet and people swearing as much as possible trying hard to come off edgy -complaining about trivial things online who’s dissing who etc
The music scene if there even is one today is just another is an APP .A tabloid paint by the numbers and I’m fine with that for them –
-As for me I hang out on the other side of the street and nothing like that is just who I am , people who like my songs seem to like that.
I have a new 12 Inch Limited edition on Red Vinyl EP coming out April 2025 ‘Storms Of Trouble’- 5 songs -three brand new songs that will also be featured on my new album I’m recording now in Nashville TN on analog tape -live to the reels -vocals and all ,band playing together in a room – it rocks that way , plus the release will have two bonus tracks -mastered by Jerry Tubb in Austin who mastered records by John Lennon ,Kris Kristofferson,Willie Nelson,Austin City Limits and Paul McCartney
Do you have any advice for those just starting out?
If your starting out march to your own drum and be who you are Don’t compromise your integrity Its all you’ve got
beware of the envious – they usually come with a smile -take advice but only from who is sincere – weed through them ,you can figure out who’s who
Learn all the basics about songwriting and structures Then throw that all away and write a song
