Hidden Gems: Meet Roland Abma of Abma Veterinary Services

Today we’d like to introduce you to Roland Abma.

Hi Roland, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
My dream and life goal to become a veterinarian started in my childhood, when I was around 9 or 10 years old. My grandparents had a dairy farm, the best play ground for a kid, and there my love for animals started.
I am born and raised in The Netherlands, went to vet school there, and graduated as Doctor of Veterinary Medicine in 2008. I worked as mixed animal practicioner for six years in The Netherland before moving to middle Tennessee. I then worked at a small animal clinic, and for the last six years I have been running my own business Abma Veterinary Services.
Abma Veterinary Services provides mobile veterinary services to farm animals, and pets. Mostly cattle, goats, sheep, alpacas, and dogs and cats.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Coming from a different country and continent there was some getting used to veterinary medicine here. Some different rules and regulations, as well as some differences in disease prevalence. But mostly it has been a smooth road with many blessings.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Abma Veterinary Services?
Abma Veterinary Services is owned and operated by Dr. Roland Abma, DVM. AVS services a large area in northern middle Tennessee, and even into southern Kentucky. AVS is a mobile business, meaning we travel to our clients, instead of clients coming to an animal hospital or clinic. This allows for a personal connection with clients and their animals.
Dr. Abma wants to be a resource for local farmers, helping them run their business, this is done through consulting and herd health management. And Dr. Abma also helps provide pet care for client’s pets during house calls.
