Hidden Gems: Meet Shayla McClendon of Beyond Beauty Esthetics

Today we’d like to introduce you to Shayla McClendon.

Hi Shayla, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My name is Shayla McClendon, I was born and raised in Knoxville, Tn but I moved to Nashville, TN in 2013 and I’ve called this place home since. I first developed my passion for the beauty and skin industry during college, I was working at all the makeup and skin counters in Macys and doing my peers makeup. My love for the industry was always there but when I graduated from Tennessee State University I was confused and extremely stressed trying to find a job straight out of college. So I disregarded my passion and immediately started working in Insurance where I wasn’t happy and started considering a new career path. I spoke to a friend who had just completed her education with Esthetician school and it was like a light bulb went off and I knew exactly what I should be doing. At that moment I quickly enrolled into the Aveda Esthetician program and the rest became history, now I’m here today 4 years into owning my own Esthetician business.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It was not a smooth road whatsoever, plenty of bumps along the way but it made me the business woman that I am today. When I first graduated from Esthetics school, it was during COVID-19 which was a difficult time for everyone. I wasn’t able to capitalize on many job opportunities due to Covid restrictions, which left me struggling to pay for rent, food and all bills. I constantly prayed for God to bring me a job and within a few weeks I secured a job working as waxer. As you can imagine I was elated and overjoyed but within 3 months all employees were laid off right around the holiday season, which was devastating to say the least. But no weapon formed against shall prosper and I was able to find another waxing job that I loved and gave me the tools I needed to start my own business. Once it was time for me to venture out and curate my own business you deal with a lot of Naysayers and people who don’t see your vision as you do. I struggled with thinking ” I’m in over my head and I will never make it.” Nevertheless, I didn’t let that discourage me it only fueled the fire inside me to prove to myself and everyone else that I am capable of doing anything that I put my mind to. I struggled for the first few years : securing clients, inventory, and making ends meet, but eventually all hard work pays off and when you trust in God he makes a way for you. If you believe in yourself, the sky is the limit !

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
My business Beyond Beauty Esthetics specializes in Waxing, Vajacials, Tinting/ lash lift , Facials and Bodysculpting. I’ve been waxing for six years now and Its truly made me happiest person doing what I love. I’m mainly known for my waxing services but my favorite service to offer are Vajacials. You may ask what are Vajacials ? It’s a relaxing treatment that treats ingrown hairs, removes dead skin cells, and smooth bumps around the bikini line, it also prevents acne, helps with hyperpigmentation, and many more. It includes a cleanse + steam, mild exfoliant, high frequency, followed by a customized hydro jelly mask, completed with a soothing serum. This treatment sets us apart from our competitors because not many service providers offer full Vajacials and at Beyond Beauty Esthetics we don’t cut corners, we want to make sure you receive the best service and have the ultimate experience. i want all my guests to feel loved, empowered, and appreciated, I love meeting new people and creating long lasting friendships. My goal is to make you feel confident in your skin and to guide/ educate you on all things skin and beauty.

We’d love to hear about any fond memories you have from when you were growing up?
My favorite childhood memory was spending time with my Great Grandmother at the nursing home. I would bring my guitar ( no I didn’t know how to actually play) and make up songs on the spot to sing to her and all her friends in the nursing home. I brought them so much joy and happiness by just being the kind and bubbly person I am today. Memories like that will always leave an imprint on my heart.
