Meet Karl Bremer of Family Care Center

Today we’d like to introduce you to Karl Bremer.

Hi karl, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
As a lifelong Texan, I was captivated by the energy of Nashville and decided to take the leap to move here over six years ago. Since then, I’ve dedicated my career to the field of mental health. I began my college journey at age 40, embracing my path as a late bloomer in therapy. Helping others discover their best selves is deeply rewarding for me—I feel privileged to have a front row seat to their journeys.
Outside of work, I’m happiest in nature. My favorite activities are golf, Pickleball, and anything that gets me out on the water. My wife of nearly 40 years keeps me grounded, reminding me to embrace my adventurous spirit while taking life at a steady pace and not seeking the spotlight.
Recovery has truly been my compass. Celebrating 21 years of sobriety opened the door for me to help others through music, art, equine therapy, and honest conversations about life’s brevity. I thrive on connection and community, never wanting to miss out—whether it’s joining in a dance, singing, or enjoying time around a fire pit with friends.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
As a Native American, I am deeply aware of how deeply addiction has affected my community. After achieving sobriety, I felt a strong calling from God to enter the recovery world and help others walk the same path. My Chickasaw tribe generously supported my education, enabling me to begin this journey. Starting college at age 40 to pursue a master’s degree in psychology was daunting—especially as someone who struggled to pass high school.
Throughout this time, I balanced a full-time role as a Substance Abuse Counselor with being a full-time student. My wife’s unwavering support, especially with our two teenage sons at home, was invaluable. They watched me transform from an alcoholic into a sober father committed to change and growth. I was determined to show my family that dreams can be realized, even when the odds are against you. With a history of addiction spanning several generations and no college graduates before me, I was especially motivated to break the cycle. I am proud to say that I remain sober to this day, without a single relapse. I graduated Magna Cum Laude at the top of my class, proving to myself and my family that transformation and achievement are truly possible.

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Currently, I am grateful to work for a forward-thinking practice alongside dedicated providers who prioritize quality care for every client. Being part of a collaborative treatment team enables us to offer stability and comprehensive support—especially for those utilizing insurance coverage. My clinical specialties include couples therapy, addressing codependency, relationship tools, and fostering self-worth and self-esteem. Life can be incredibly challenging, and everyone deserves someone cheering them on through it.
Clients often say, “Karl will shoot straight with you,” and I take pride in creating an authentic, supportive space where individuals can rediscover themselves, make real progress, and embrace every step of the journey. I believe that life’s demands never truly pause, but with the right support, anyone can overcome even the toughest obstacles.
Additionally, I have the privilege of serving as a therapist and guide at Onsite, a nationally recognized retreat where we provide healing hospitality through intensive clinical programs. Onsite offers both short-term and residential trauma treatment, integrating experiential modalities like equine therapy, expressive arts, and adventure-based therapies for truly transformative results.

Of all my accomplishments, my marriage remains what I am most proud of. When my wife and I married—me, 21 years old with a rat tail and her, 23 and in nursing school—most thought we wouldn’t last. Nearly 40 years later, our relationship stands as both a personal achievement and a foundation for my couples counseling work. My approach is not only shaped by my academic training but also by what I know works in my own marriage, blending evidence-based practice with lived experience.

What would you say have been one of the most important lessons you’ve learned?
Embrace what comes, ask for help, find laughter in all situations, & it is totally okay to eat your emotions.
