Today we’d like to introduce you to Chris Kemper.
Hi Chris, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
Serving others has always improved my quality of life. As a kid, my parents would take us down to Tijuana, Mexico to build houses for homeless families. The first thing I learned from that was that excess does not produce happiness. The families we built homes for, but also the community (their friends and neighbors) were fundamentally kind, gentle, happy people. There was a core happiness in those poor barrios that I hadn’t seen in my suburban, American upbringing. So selfishly, I knew that serving people was good for me beyond just how it felt, and believing that I’m helping someone else. So, as I journeyed into adulthood, I spent time in several different fields (national construction supply chain, commercial real estate, counseling unhoused, chemically dependent) before landing on franchising The Joint. It was the right mix for me, of pursuing a business venture that allowed me to benefit the lives of the people we serve, while also getting the chance to build a team and culture that gives people a healthy, supportive working environment.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The struggles I’ve had along the way have structurally changed my perspective, and anchored my appreciation for the things that really matter to me. I opened my first clinic in Brentwood in 2013, owned as many as 8, and am currently at 5, soon working my way down to 2-3 clinics. I’ve sold a clinic, closed clinics, and seen a lot of the human experience over the last 12-13 years. I’ve had to look at bankruptcy during some difficult seasons, and seen successes beyond what I hoped when I started, so I’ve really traveled a wide-ranging path. Most of all, these different experiences have crystallized my integrity, my values, and made it more clear to me who I am. There’s always more to unfold, but I am deeply grateful to know myself better as a result of repeatedly being required to find and cultivate aspects of my self I didn’t know existed until I needed them.

What’s next?
Just over a year ago, my family and I moved to a small town in Baja Sur, Mexico. After years in pattern making in Los Angeles, and years working as a wardrobe + prop stylist, my wife is starting a children’s clothing line. My focus will be supporting her in that venture and being the most present and healthy father I can be to my kids.
