Life, Values & Legacy: Our Chat with Samuel Mason

We’re looking forward to introducing you to Samuel Mason . Check out our conversation below.

Good morning Samuel, we’re so happy to have you here with us and we’d love to explore your story and how you think about life and legacy and so much more. So let’s start with a question we often ask: What is something outside of work that is bringing you joy lately?
Outside of work, time spent with my family brings me the most joy! I especially love any time I get when it involves our baby girl. Her smile lights up the room, and she has the biggest personality. She’s become the highlight of my days, and taught me more about myself than anything before.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Samuel Mason, and I’m a personal trainer with a lifelong background in athletics. I ended my sports and athletics career after playing baseball at Auburn University, and since built a career in the fitness industry with experience across Los Angeles, London, Miami, and Nashville.

Starting out as a trainer I didn’t know exactly how I’d want to grow in the fitness / wellness space. To be honest, there wasn’t much guidance on how to make a career or what opportunities you had when I was starting out… other than just by doing it yourself. That said, I pushed myself to be my best and said yes to opportunities as they presented themselves. Rising to the occasion, asking what more I could do, and showing an interest in wanting to be a part of the bigger picture; I eventually held leadership positions among industry leaders. I’m proud of the work I’ve been able to do, lessons learned, and impressions made along the way. It’s shaped who I am, allowed me discover my passion, and continues to push me to grow.

I’ll soon be stepping into an operational and leadership position with Iconix Fitness Nashville. This is an exciting time in my career, and I’m looking forward to being a part of something special both to the industry, and for the city of Nashville. The community they’re building, the team they’ve sent, and the space they’re developing have blown me away in all the best ways. I’m looking forward to things moving and sharing this all with you!

Thanks for sharing that. Would love to go back in time and hear about how your past might have impacted who you are today. Who taught you the most about work?
Specific to my work space and experience, Astrid Swan, my first mentor in the fitness industry gave me my foundations and was most influential to my career.

She taught me the importance of it all being about others, not yourself. From colleagues to clients, our responsibility is to look out for each other, and help others improve their lives.

If you could say one kind thing to your younger self, what would it be?
I’d tell my younger self that your ambition is a gift, and it’s going to take you many places. Remember to trust yourself, speak up for what you want, and stop worrying about how everyone else is doing things. Everything you’re doing, even during the hard times, is preparing you for who you’re supposed to be.

Alright, so if you are open to it, let’s explore some philosophical questions that touch on your values and worldview. Is the public version of you the real you?
Absolutely! I am who you see, whether we’re together or online. Authenticity is something I take pride in, and something I believe is crucial to having success in my workspace.

Okay, we’ve made it essentially to the end. One last question before you go. Are you doing what you were born to do—or what you were told to do?
I believe I’m doing what I was born to do. I’ve always followed my dreams, and have pivoted many times. That’s led to my growth and who I’m proud to be today. This career has become a space I’m able to help others accomplish feats they hadn’t thought they could do before, and teach them how to go about their life with that same confidence.
