Story & Lesson Highlights with Johnny Pagano

Johnny Pagano shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.

Johnny, a huge thanks to you for investing the time to share your wisdom with those who are seeking it. We think it’s so important for us to share stories with our neighbors, friends and community because knowledge multiples when we share with each other. Let’s jump in: What are you most proud of building — that nobody sees?
What I’m most proud of isn’t just the decks and fences we build — it’s the systems and standards behind the scenes that ensure every job is done right. Most homeowners don’t see the planning, quality checks, and attention to detail that go into every project, but that’s what sets JP Builders apart. It’s about building trust and consistency, so every customer knows they can count on us — even long after the job is done.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I am the owner of JP Builders, based here in Nashville. We specialize in custom decks and fences, helping homeowners transform their outdoor spaces with quality craftsmanship and attention to detail. What sets us apart is how hands-on we are with every project — I personally oversee each job to make sure it meets our high standards.

Our story is really about building trust and delivering results. We know home improvement can feel overwhelming, so our goal is to make the process simple, professional, and stress-free for our clients. Every deck or fence we build isn’t just about the structure itself — it’s about giving families spaces they can enjoy for years, while knowing they’re working with a team that values honesty, quality, and reliability.

Right now, we’re focused on growing our reputation across Nashville, continuing to provide exceptional service, and helping more homeowners feel confident in their outdoor living spaces.

Thanks for sharing that. Would love to go back in time and hear about how your past might have impacted who you are today. Who taught you the most about work?
I’ve learned the most about work from doing it myself. Growing JP Builders from the ground up taught me lessons no classroom ever could — showing up every day, figuring things out on the fly, and holding myself accountable for results. That said, I’ve also learned a lot from the people I work with — experienced tradesmen and subcontractors who’ve been in the industry for decades. Watching their attention to detail and work ethic has shaped how I run the business and set the standard for every project we take on.

Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
Absolutely. Like any business owner, there were moments early on when things got tough — long hours, unexpected setbacks, juggling jobs while trying to grow the company. There were times I questioned if it was all worth it. But what kept me going was the vision. I knew if I stayed consistent, focused on quality, and took care of every customer the right way, the results would come. Looking back now, those tough moments are exactly what built the foundation JP Builders stands on today.

Sure, so let’s go deeper into your values and how you think. What’s a cultural value you protect at all costs?
The cultural value I protect above all else is integrity. At JP Builders, we don’t cut corners, overpromise, or do anything that would compromise the trust our clients place in us. Every team member knows that how we do the work is just as important as the work itself. Protecting that standard — being honest, transparent, and accountable — is what keeps our reputation strong and ensures homeowners feel confident hiring us.

Thank you so much for all of your openness so far. Maybe we can close with a future oriented question. What is the story you hope people tell about you when you’re gone?
I hope people say I was someone who built things the right way — not just in business, but in life. That I treated people fairly, delivered on my word, and created something lasting. With JP Builders, it’s never just about building decks and fences — it’s about building trust, relationships, and a name that means quality and reliability. When I’m gone, I want people to remember that I cared about doing good work and doing right by people.
