Mike Patton shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.
Mike , a huge thanks to you for investing the time to share your wisdom with those who are seeking it. We think it’s so important for us to share stories with our neighbors, friends and community because knowledge multiples when we share with each other. Let’s jump in: Have any recent moments made you laugh or feel proud?
Attended my first road game in the NFL as a media member recently in Houston.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Mike Patton. I am the host and producer of three distinct podcasts. One is called Touring The AFC South. I have been doing that podcast for over four years and it covers the AFC South teams the Tennessee Titans, Houston Texans, Jacksonville Jaguars and Indianapolis Colts. The second podcast is called This Woman Works and the purpose of the podcast is to highlight and elevate Black women by having them come on the podcast and tell their stories from where they started to where they currently are and everything in between. The third one I am a co-host and producer for is called Let’s Talk HBCUS. I host that one with co-host Scott Wallace and that one has been around since this past summer.
Along with these three podcasts, I also am a contributing writer for The Sporting News on AFC South football and I also do freelance work for the National Association of Black Journalists’ website called Black News & Views, where I produce the Sports History in Black for the week.
Okay, so here’s a deep one: What did you believe about yourself as a child that you no longer believe?
As a child, I thought I was going to be an NFL player. I loved the game and still do, but I learned that over time, I can communicate the sport and love talking it about it as much as I loved playing it. So that is where my love of the game now lies.
If you could say one kind thing to your younger self, what would it be?
Explore all the things you can do and be confident in them. I knew I could write when I was in high school. I just did not ever think to explore it because I was stuck on my main dream and not understanding that one dream does not negate the other. Live out all your dreams because one of them could also become reality.
So a lot of these questions go deep, but if you are open to it, we’ve got a few more questions that we’d love to get your take on. What would your closest friends say really matters to you?
My closest friends would say making sure things are right is really important to me. I am a hard worker and have been a hard worker at everything I have ever tried to do. The biggest thing that I continue to tell myself and try to do even more each day is to enjoy the journey while doing the work and enjoy that ride on the way to fulfilling my dreams.
Before we go, we’d love to hear your thoughts on some longer-run, legacy type questions. What is the story you hope people tell about you when you’re gone?
I hope people tell the story on how hard I worked, how kind I was to people around me and how helpful I was to those who had questions. I believe in giving to people just like people have given to me and poured knowledge and support into me. And I would want people to tell stories about how I poured into them and helped them or was an example for them with the hard work that I put into chasing my dreams.
