An Inspired Chat with Heather Van Laanen & Mark Van Laanen of Fairview

We’re looking forward to introducing you to Heather Van Laanen & Mark Van Laanen. Check out our conversation below.

Hi Heather & Mark, thank you for taking the time to reflect back on your journey with us. I think our readers are in for a real treat. There is so much we can all learn from each other and so thank you again for opening up with us. Let’s get into it: What’s more important to you—intelligence, energy, or integrity?
Integrity is by far the most important thing a person can harness. Without integrity, you have no trust. Without trust, you have nothing.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
Hello, we are Southern Roots Photography LLC formally known as Van Laanen Photography. We decided that a name change was needed when we made the move from California to Tennessee. We love capturing people’s moments and making memories that will last a lifetime. Capturing someone’s photos is more than just pushing a button on a camera, It’s about locking that moment into a photo for a lifetime. That is why we do what we do, to lock in that moment of time forever. We love doing all types of photos; weddings, families, boudoir, and more! If you can dream it, we want to capture it.

Appreciate your sharing that. Let’s talk about your life, growing up and some of topics and learnings around that. Who taught you the most about work?
My mom was the hardest working person I ever met. Single mom raising 2 girls on her own. She tried to give us the best of the best and she really taught me what it means to work hard. She was dedicated and honest. No matter how she was feeling, she always had a smile on her face.

What did suffering teach you that success never could?
Suffering taught me that you only suffer when you feel like you’ve failed. Negativity will make you suffer, where as positivity helps you grow. Rock bottom is not fun but it taught me how strong I am and what a beautiful story that God is writing despite the struggles of life.

So a lot of these questions go deep, but if you are open to it, we’ve got a few more questions that we’d love to get your take on. Is the public version of you the real you?
Yes and no. I walk with my head held high, smiling at everyone no matter how I feel. Sometimes this comes off intimidating, people think I’m unapproachable, while others approach me all the time. I am kind and helpful, don’t let me tattoos, piercings, and red hair scare you. I am loving and will give you my smile if you need it.

Okay, we’ve made it essentially to the end. One last question before you go. If you knew you had 10 years left, what would you stop doing immediately?
I would stop stressing the small things and start making memories with those I love. Life feels like its a constant go, go, go and I have a bad habit of constantly needing to be on the move. I would cherish all the time I had left with the ones I love the most.
