Life & Work with Ken Allen of Springfield

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ken Allen.

Ken, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I discovered my passion for storytelling in 1993, inspired by my deep interest in family genealogy and the untold stories woven through generations. When my own family’s history proved elusive, I turned my curiosity into creativity, crafting my first novel, McKenna’s Reckoning—a compelling work of fiction that explores the enduring ties of family, their struggles, and identity. I am currently writing the second book in the series.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I wrote the first iteration in about a year, but was not happy with it, so I kept it on a disk in my desk. I would revisit it now and then and tweak it, and then leave it. This went on for many years until I retired in 2023. I joined a local writers group and picked it back up. The story is similar to what I started with but it has been totally revamped and expanded.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am retired now, which gives me the luxury of time. Time to research, time to plot, and time to write. I have always had a vivid imagination, but my writing phase did not start until 1993. I’ve done many things in my life that I am proud of, but my greatest accomplishment is when I held a printed copy of my novel in my hand.

Before we let you go, we’ve got to ask if you have any advice for those who are just starting out?
Keep at it.
When you don’t know what to write, write anyway.
Write the story you have in your head first and then embellish it with description.
