Today we’d like to introduce you to Jesseca Toovey.
Hi Jesseca, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I had the pleasure of growing up in church where I learned to worship! From the time I was little I had a yearning and desire to worship. I love that God places gifts on the inside and then develops them as we grow. He places people around us to nurture those gifts and help bring them to light. I have had some many mentors, coaches, etc help to grow the gift of singing and worship both in the natural and in the spiritual areas. I sang my way through high school in youth band and choirs but there was always an inner intimidation I had. Every time I would get up in front of people and sing, I got so nervous and felt completely sick to my stomach. I would close my eyes and you could hear my voice shake. It was scary, I felt insecure, incapable, not good enough. It’s funny how we let the voices of others shape us. As I have grown, I have learned there is only one voice that matters and that is God. He called me, chose me, created me, and predestined me. He gave me the gifts and talents and they were always meant to glorify him! I am so grateful for the years of growth, the voice of God speaking life and truth over me. I have learned that I serve and life to please an audience of one. Knowing this has taken the weight off of me to perform, be good enough, have it all together, and the need to please. Now I worship and sing from a place of knowing who I am in Christ, knowing who’s I am, and knowing that I am loved. He is pleased when we say yes to him and offer our gifts back to him. Today I sing and lead worship with confidence, not because of who I am or what I have but because I know I belong to him and it’s all for him! God has been so good and gracious with me over the years. It’s crazy to look back and see how far the Lord has brought me!!
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
No, it has not been a smooth road to say the least. I think it started out smooth, going through life with little struggle or challenge. The saying, “when it rains it pours,” couldn’t be more true in so many places in life. My journey has been full of surprises, challenges, and circumstances. But, I’m not here to major on the minors. Although some of the challenges I’ve faced are major and could seem insurmountable and impossible, I believe that God is with us through every storm. I have seen him walk me through some of the toughest seasons in life. The word of God is true and God is faithful to be with us. Deuteronomy 31:6 says “He will never leave me nor forsake me”. And I have seen that be true in my life, time and time again. The road is never easy, it seems long and hard at times but I know that seasons change. The challenges we face today will pass. I’m so grateful that seasons change but that God remains the same!!
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
First and foremost, I am a worshipper! It’s not just something I do but its who I am. I have the honor of leading people in worship in churches across Colorado. I have been planted in my home church for over 30 years. In recent years the Lord has moved me into a new season of worship where I have the opportunity to travel to lead worship for churches and conferences. And what an honor it is. I am humbled that I would get to help people have an encounter with the Lord. I believe this comes from our personal relationship with the Lord that then overflows out of us to others.
Many say I am known for leading people straight to Jesus, that I carry a presence that has the power to break chains, heal hearts, and restore brokenness. But, it’s not about me, it’s ALL about Jesus. My prayer before I ever lead others in to worship is that people would see Jesus and not Jesseca. That people would encounter his presence and not a performance. It’s great to sing songs but it’s something entirely different for people to be affected and changed by the message and presence we carry.
I am most proud of my life with Jesus, my faith walk with him. I am proud to be a daughter of God. There isn’t a greater joy that fulfilling a destiny I didn’t come up with. There’s nothing more satisfying that living for something greater than yourself and not taking the credit for it. God rewards in so many ways and I am proud to love and serve a good, good father!!
What sets me apart? To the natural ear, nothing! There are tons of singers more talented than I. As I mentioned about, I believe what sets me apart is my story and the place from which I worship from. We all have a different journey and that is what gives us history with God. Because of the history that I have with him, I believe I worship from a place that no one else can, because it’s MY story, MY journey, and MY history with the Lord. That makes each of us unique in our own way. That looks different for everyone and we are all set apart in a divine way, by God, for a purpose!
Before we go, is there anything else you can share with us?
If you’re reading this and you don’t know the Lord. I want to take a minute to encourage you. Life is hard, seasons are hard. What I know is that we don’t have to do this life alone. We don’t have to be the statistic or the norm. We can walk through life from a perspective of hope, faith, and grace. There is nothing and no one in this world that can satisfy like Jesus can and I can say that with confidence because I know. It just takes a little faith and a lot of trust to put your hope and confidence in someone you cannot see. But, I guarantee you, it’s worth it!! He will change your life in ways you never thought, hoped, or dreamed. Will it be easy, no, but I promise you with will be worth it!
